"We're thrilled for the return of Giant Pandas to San Francisco Zoo & Gardens after all these years! The Giant Panda symbolizes hope for conservation collaboration and bridges divides between different cultures. We thank SF Mayor London Breed and her team, the City's Asian Community leadership, and our colleagues in China for returning these amazing ambassadors of conservation! I also thank artist Yiying Lu for her beautiful artwork that honors our City's ability to build literal and figurative bridges." - Tanya M. Peterson, CEO and Executive Director, San Francisco Zoological Society

Ape Awareness Month
April is Ape Awareness Month, and we are focusing on expanding gorilla conservation education in new high tech ways.

At Gorilla Trek VR, explore with world-renowned primatologist Dr. Tara Stoinski up 10,000 feet to visit a remarkable family of mountain gorillas. Witness in 3D virtual reality the unique family dynamics that pit one silverback mountain gorilla against another for control of the gorilla family. There are just over one thousand mountain gorillas left in the world and it is vitally important to study the behavior of these amazing animals so that we can help save them from extinction.

The Spring Bloom Continues!
Spring is here! With the warmer weather comes the blooming of our gardens, which is beautiful to see but also has an impact on wildlife that serve as pollinators.

Today we focus on the Aeonium Arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ (Black Rose), a succulent that is native to Africa. This is a drought-tolerant plant that requires low water use. Its signature burgundy pointed leaves add a unique color to the landscape of our gardens, and in certain temperatures the color turns to an almost black hue. This plant can be found throughout the Zoo grounds.
