** Please Ask the City of San Francisco to Restore our Funding
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Community,

We were devastated to learn last week that DCYF (The Department of Children, Youth and Families) and the City of San Francisco have not funded our long-standing grant that supports Science Enrichment After School Programs and enables us to bring so many accesible science programs for K-12 youth in our three community workshops and also off-site at many schools and community based organizations. We appealed this decision and are waiting to hear back.

We have received massive support from community members, students, families and youth who have already written letters to Mayor Breed and the Board of Supervisors to restore our funding.

Please send an email to the SF Board of Supervisors Budget Chair Chan, your district supervisor (https://sfbos.org/roster-members) and Mayor Breed to explain how Mission Science Workshop's programs are essential for the community and ask the funding to be restored.

Please email:

Supervisor Connie Chan: chanstaff at sfgov.org (mailto:chanstaff at sfgov.org) , connie.chan at sfgov.org
Supervisor Walton : Shamann.Walton at sfgov.org (mailto:Shamann.Walton at sfgov.org) , Tracy.Gallardo at sfgov.org (mailto:Tracy.Gallardo at sfgov.org)
Mayor London Breed: MayorLondonBreed at sfgov.org (mailto:MayorLondonBreed at sfgov.org)
Sup. Melgar: MelgarStaff at sfgov.org (mailto:MelgarStaff at sfgov.org) , myrna.melgar at sfgov.org
Sup. Mandelman: Rafael.Mandelman at sfgov.org, MandelmanStaff at sfgov.org (https://sfbos.org/supervisor-mandelman-contact-us)

Thank you for your support and advocacy and helping us bring impactful and accesible Science Education for all children, youth and families in San Francisco. SI SE PUEDE!

And please reach out to Sonia with any questions: sonia at missionscienceworkshop.org

We are having a special Tinker Tuesday tomorrow at our Excelsior Site and open to all like every Tuesday afternoon if you prefer to write a physical letter of support we will be here from 3-5 pm.

** One Year of Bayview Science Workshop!
------------------------------------------------------------
We celebrated our Bayview Science Workshop one year anniversary and we couldn't be prouder of the impact this workshop is having on Southeast San Francisco youth and families.

We've already seen over 3,000 individual students and their families several times through our Bayview Science Workshop field trips, after-schools, open weekend days, and mobile programs! We've enjoyed engineering egg drops, taking apart speakers, assembling bone puzzles, petting our leopard gecko Dr. Drew, and exploring electromagnets, seeds, fossils, and more.

We brought our whale to Bret Harte Elementary School where we currently see every classroom for After School Science Enrichment

We've also enjoyed partnering with many partners old and new to us! We loved partnering with Boys & Girls Club and YMCA for after-school programs, bringing students to the workshop for fun hands-on science projects, learning to build and engineer new ideas, and learning to use tools. And for the first time, we are excited to be starting a new partnership with KIPP Elementary School in the Bayview, reaching those students for the very first time with exciting science enrichment!

This would not have been possible without the support of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

** Over 1500 Students Walk-Through our Blood Vessel
------------------------------------------------------------

So far this school year, we've already reached well over 1,500 students with our amazing mobile exhibit, our Giant Blood Vessel!

Our giant blood vessel provides students of all ages with immersive science and health education where students learn about cardiovascular health, anatomy and physiology and human biology through our cell scavenger hunt, gas exchange games and many health related exhibits that come with the blood vessel.

It sparks so many student questions and so much curiosity. Students often can't wait to use the microscopes after the exhibit and look at blood vessel and other human biology cell slides, extract iron from cereal or measure their blood pressure.

So far this year, we have visited three San Francsico public high schools with the Blood Vessel exhibit: Mission High School, Thurgood Marshall High School, and Burton High School -- reaching hundreds of students at each school as well as the South San Francisco Community Center and Library inauguration.

If you want to check out our amazing exhibit stop by our Excelsior site on Saturday May 18th!

** Library STEM Program Expands to SFUSD Middle Schools!
------------------------------------------------------------
The STEM Cart program we launched last year has expanded to new middle schools! This month, we launched the program in James Lick Middle School and Everett Middle School. Through this program, students can visit during their lunch hour to participate in hands-on science activities like extracting DNA from a strawberry, growing oyster mushrooms, making liquid nitrogen ice cream, and building mini fan-powered cars.

The cart allows for easy access to having a mini-workshop! It is easy to move and store, and can fit many activity materials that students can easily access within their own schools. We are particularly excited to offer this program within middle schools, to provide continuity for students who visited our workshops during elementary school.
