Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   2024 Annual Dahlia Show at The Hall of Flowers Come join us on August 17 & 18 for the Dahlia Dell Annual Dahlia Show. Each summer, on the third weekend in August, the Dahlia Society of California draws thousands of visitors to its annual show in the enormous Hall of Flowers. Growers from all over the state bring their best blooms to compete. Blooms in all categories are judged and awarded ribbons, including the elusive Best in Show. Other categories: Best Photo; People’s Choice Award; Best Arrangement; Best Junior Bloom; and Nature’s Oddities. This year’s arrangement theme is The Summer Olympics. You must be a member to compete, but the public is welcome to see this eye-popping event. Learn more at the link below. Dahlia Show at the County Fair Building   National Night Out Celebrated in Our Parks Thank you to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), our Park Rangers, and everyone who came out for citywide National Night Out block parties on August 6. This annual community-building campaign organized by SFPD promotes community partnerships and neighborhood comradery to create safer and stronger neighborhoods. We were proud to have hosted many of these block parties in our parks, including at Balboa Park, Boeddeker Park, JFK Promenade by Skatin' Place, Mission Bay Kids Park, Mission Playground, and the Panhandle. We look forward to celebrating again next year!   Park Rangers Serve as Giants Color Guard for World Ranger Day For World Ranger Day last week, the San Francisco Giants invited our Park Rangers to serve as the color guard for the game. Thank you to the Giants for this honor! We are grateful to our Park Rangers for their commitment to ensuring our parks are safe for all to enjoy. Whether responding to emergencies or serving as ambassadors to San Francisco's many communities, we’re appreciative for all they do to better our city.   Registration for Fall Baseball & Softball Academy Opens August 12 The Giants Community Fund, in partnership with Rec and Park, are excited to host their second fall Baseball and Softball Academy. This free eight week program based at the Crocker Amazon baseball fields is for players with previous baseball or softball experience going into middle school or high school in the fall, with a desire to try out for a team next season. The academy begins the week of September 14, with each team having one 30-minute practice prior to a 90-minute Saturday game. Additionally, the academy will feature guest speakers from within the Giants organization and from Major League Baseball who will impart their wisdom about the business and game of baseball. Fall Academy Registration   El Farolito Soccer Wins National Championship Congratulations to El Farolito Soccer Club on winning the National Premier Soccer League championship game against the FC Motown Celtics by a score of 2-1 in Madison, New Jersey on Saturday, August 3. Forward Erik Arias rose to the occasion in the match’s 62nd minute, sending a goal past a pinwheeling FC Motown goalie to put El Farolito up, 2-1. El Farolito Wins National Championship   Revive, Repair & Play Party From August 12 to 16 at the Community Innovation Lab at India Basin Shoreline Park Come join us at India Basin Shoreline Park from August 12 to 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. daily for a Revive, Repair & Play Party. This do-it-yourself event series is for all people looking to learn how to fix, upscale & craft items in your everyday life. Each day of this event series will focus on different topics, including a Bike Bonanza, Home Revival, Urban Garden Grow Fest, Fashion Soiree, and Skate Jam. Revive, Repair & Play     SF Live: Alvon Johnson and West Grand Brass Band at Union Square on August 8 Come join us at Union Square on August 8th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for SF Live. SF Live   Activity and Class Schedule for Civic Center Plazas Check out all of the amazing drop-in activities and scheduled classes available at the reimagined UN Plaza and surrounding Civic Center area. From the Heart of the City Farmers' Market and live music at Fulton Plaza to free drop-in yoga classes at UN Plaza, we have something for everyone to get out and play in San Francisco's core. Civic Center Plazas   Adaptive Bike Program in Golden Gate Park on Saturdays San Francisco's free Adaptive Bike Program is in Golden Gate Park on Saturdays through October 26. In partnership with the BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, we're providing hand cycles, foot trikes and tandem bikes for use on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These adaptive cycles will be available at the Music Concourse behind the Bandshell (75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive) and next to the accessible parking lot. No reservations are needed, with availability first come, first served. Outside Lands 311       Department on the Status of Women Needs Assessment Survey The San Francisco Department on the Status of Women (DOSW) is conducting its community needs assessment and wants to hear from City and County of San Francisco employees about their experiences in San Francisco. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and will inform DOSW’s programming priorities. DOSW Needs Assessment Survey   Bricks at Embarcadero Plaza SF Rec and Park, along with partners the SF Office of Economic Workforce Development, SF New Deal, and Into the Streets, is proud to announce the launch of Bricks at Embarcadero Plaza, a new event series beginning today. Bricks will bring an array of exciting weekly activations to the plaza from Wednesday to Sunday, including happy hours, dance parties, trivia, family days, networking events, and more. The pilot program, which will run through October, bolsters efforts Mayor Breed has undertaken recently to invest in enhanced and updated Downtown public spaces, ensuring Downtown remains a world-class destination. It also builds off recent activations organized by Rec and Park to revitalize the plaza, including pop-up padel courts and a free concert held last month by Another Planet Entertainment, which welcomed approximately 5,000 people to the plaza. Bricks at Embarcadero Plaza Apply for the Chinatown Artist Registry; Workshop on August 13 The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) invites artists and artist teams residing in the United States to submit qualifications for the Chinatown Artist Registry to be considered for upcoming public art opportunities in the neighborhood. Artists with a meaningful connection to Chinatown––including current or former residents, those with relationships to the area, those who share its culture and values, or those with other significant ties––are encouraged to apply. Note that there will be application workshops on Tuesday, August 13 at 5:30 p.m. RSVP at the link below. The Chinatown Artist Registry will be used to select artists to be commissioned for a range of public art projects associated with current and upcoming construction in the neighborhood, including improvements to Portsmouth Square. Chinatown Artist Registry   Kezar Pavilion Community Meeting on August 24 Join us for a Kezar Pavilion Renovation Project community meeting on Saturday, August 24 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Kezar Pavilion Meeting   Coyote Pupping Season and Ambassadors in our Parks Have you spotted our Rec Park Coyote Ambassadors and their life-sized friend at your local park? During pupping season (spring to fall) they set up shop at parks to teach visitors how to coexist with San Francisco's native coyote population. Ambassadors have tons of information on the local history of coyotes, their environmental impact, common behaviors, and what to do if you cross paths with these wild locals. If you see our ambassadors, stop by to say hello, pick up a pamphlet, and grab a bandana with some of our best coexistence tips! These diverse musical performances will be held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Thursday, August 8 from 2 to 5 p.m., we have John Tardiff, Kevin North, and Karaj lost coast. Illuminate Live   San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am at Kezar Pavilion on August 8 The legendary San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am basketball league is at Kezar Pavilion (755 Stanyan Street). The league features many talented hoopers ranging from professionals to college players, with league alumni including Steph Curry and Jason Kidd. Illuminate Live   Tool Care Workshop at In Chan Kaajal Community Garden on August 10 Join our Urban Agriculture team for its tool care workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at In Chan Kaajal Community Garden (278 Shotwell Street). Staff will teach participants how to care for their garden tools to help ensure their effectiveness and longevity. Participants are invited to bring their own hand tools (no power tools) from home to perform maintenance. It is located at the 14th Avenue East Meadow just west of the Rose Garden on the JFK Promenade.   The seasonal destination is a collaboration between Rec and Park, Non Plus Ultra, Illuminate, and SF Live. Member, Staff & Volunteer Show   Introduction to Urban Beekeeping and Honey Production at Alemany Farm on Sunday, August 18 Join Rec and Park's Urban Agriculture and Community Gardens Program Director Mei Ling Hui at Alemany Farm (700 Alemany Boulevard) on Sunday, August 18 for an introduction to urban beekeeping and honey production workshop from 10 a.m. to noon. Come learn beekeeping basics, colony health, and urban honey production. This two-hour class will be hosted by members of the San Francisco Beekeeping Association and will cover the honey bee life cycle, how to identify and treat pests and diseases, and an introduction to working bees safely. All ages are welcome. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall). These free activities, from live music to mat yoga, will be hosted four times a month. Live Music   Swing into Stories at Koret Playground in Golden Gate Park on August 13 The San Francisco Public Library's (SFPL) YouthMobile is coming to parks around the city. Movement and play are essential building blocks in fostering literacy and a love of reading and the SFPL is bringing stories and song to San Francisco's parks through its Swing into Stories program. It takes place at a different park each Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The next will take place on August 13 at Koret Playground in Golden Gate Park (Kezar and MLK drives). Join us for a high-energy story time in our beautiful outdoors!  The YouthMobile offers a diverse selection of children’s library materials available for check-out with an SFPL library card. From the city’s only kid-focused bookmobile, staff circulates materials, creates library cards and provides the public with information about library services and programs.
