Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Portugal. The Man Coming to Civic Center Plaza on September 20 Another Planet Entertainment (APE) has announced that Portugal. The Man, will be headlining the second of three free music events coming to downtown on Friday, September 20 at Civic Center Plaza, beginning at 6 p.m. Over the past decade, Portugal. The Man has established itself as one of rock’s most popular bands and live phenomena, with over 1,600 shows under its belt and a storied reputation as festival favorites. They will be joined on September 20 by soul, funk, alternative band SNACKTIME. This series of concerts, produced by APE, is expected to create hundreds of local jobs and contribute greatly to the City’s economy. Transforming downtown into a leading arts, culture, and nightlife destination is one of the strategies of Mayor Breed’s Roadmap to Downtown San Francisco’s Future, aiming for a stronger, resilient downtown that is an economic and global destination. Last September, the City’s Board of Supervisors approved a plan for APE to host a series of ticketed concerts in Golden Gate Park following Outside Lands Music Festival and three Downtown locations, starting this year for the next three years. The Man at Civic Center Free Shakespeare in the Park Comes to Sue Bierman Park for First Time The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, in partnership with Rec and Park, announced that its Free Shakespeare in the Park production of "The Tempest" will perform at Sue Bierman Park (Drumm and Washington streets), just north of Embarcadero Plaza across from the Ferry Building. Performances will take place Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. on September 14, 15, 21 and 22. The free production is the latest in a diverse array of weekend and evening events bringing new energy and excitement to the Embarcadero under Mayor London Breed’s Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future. The performances at Sue Bierman Park are in addition to those scheduled at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park from from August 31 to September 8. The production is directed by Rotimi Agbabiaka and has been acclaimed for its joyfulness. Actor Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe plays the role of Prospero. Thought to be Shakespeare’s last solo written play, "The Tempest" tells the tale of a father (Prospero) and daughter (Miranda) set adrift to sea by the jealous machinations of Prospero’s brother. Shakespeare at Sue Bierman & McLaren Park Construction Begins on BAYS Memorial Garden in Golden Gate Park Last weekend, Rec and Park joined Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS) to break ground on the BAYS Breast Cancer Memorial Garden in Golden Gate Park. Once complete, the revitalized garden area will serve as a space for reflection, honoring the many people who have lost their lives from breast cancer. A big thank you to BAYS for being the driving force behind this project, which will be the first permanent and public memorial for breast cancer in the U.S. Learn more at the link below. BAYS Memorial Garden Trivia, Dance & More at Embarcadero Plaza August 22, 23, 24 & 28 Rec and Park, along with the Office of Economic Workforce Development, SF New Deal, and Into the Streets, is proud to announce the launch of Bricks at Embarcadero Plaza. Bricks will bring an array of exciting weekly activations to the plaza from Wednesday to Sunday, including happy hours, dance parties, trivia, family days, networking events, and more. This week we have Trivia by the Bay on Thursday, August 22 from 3 to 7 p.m.; Groove on the Bricks dance party on Friday, August 23 from 3 to 7 p.m.; and Family Day on Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring free drop-in educational and play activities curated and hosted by Children's Creativity Museum. The event will feature free food, photo booth, live DJ, vision board making and a screening of "Freedom Writers." Teens are invited to kickback and spend a chill night on the waterfront. Nature Play Workshop Spruces Up Rolph Nicol Jr. Play Area Last weekend, Rec and Park and San Francisco Children and Nature hosted a two-day nature play workshop at Rolph Nicol Jr. Playground, Rec and Park's first nature play area established in 2018. Contractors, builders, and other park professionals learned best practices for implementing nature play features while helping to refresh the park. Special thanks to District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio, The Low Income Investment Fund, San Francisco Department of Early Childhood, and Rocky Mountain Woodworks for making this possible. Tenderloin Recreation Center Playground Community Meeting August 23 Join Rec and Park for a community meeting to discuss an upcoming playground improvement project at Tenderloin Recreation Center on Friday, August 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the center's playground (570 Ellis Street). The project, a partnership between Rec and Park, Wu Yee Children’s Services, KABOOM!, and Low Income Investment Fund, is a Green Schoolyard Project that will focus on delivering a nature-based children’s play area, nature exploration area, seating areas, picnic tables, ADA improvements, and more. These events will take place at the overflow parking lot at Gleneagles Golf Course (2100 Sunnydale Avenue), adjacent to the McLaren Bike Park. It is located at the 14th Avenue East Meadow just west of the Rose Garden on the JFK Promenade. Additionally, Mission Pool (101 Linda Street) will have free community swim from noon to 3 p.m. as part of the event. Adaptive Bike Program in Golden Gate Park on Saturdays Check out San Francisco's free Adaptive Bike Program in Golden Gate Park on Saturdays through October 26. In partnership with the BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, we're providing hand cycles, foot trikes and tandem bikes for use on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These adaptive cycles will be available at the Music Concourse behind the Bandshell (75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive), next to the accessible parking lot. Drop-In Wheelchair Basketball at Glen Park Recreation Center Glen Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street) is hosting a free drop-in wheelchair basketball session every Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. in partnership with BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation. All ages are welcome. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall). Swing into Stories in San Francisco Parks The San Francisco Public Library's (SFPL) YouthMobile is coming to parks around the city. Movement and play are essential building blocks in fostering literacy and a love of reading and the SFPL is bringing stories and song to San Francisco's parks through its Swing into Stories program. It takes place at a different park each Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon (Storytime begins at 10:30 a.m.) with the next at Redwood Grove Playground in McLaren Park on August 27.
