Our mobile programs have been growing!
This year, we have been greatly expanding our mobile programs to reach more students all across the Bay Area that may not be able to typically travel to our workshops. With the help of our awesome new staff member, Sam, and our brand new van "Vancent Van Go" -- we have already provided 130 mobile programs so far this school year, reaching nearly 2,000 individual students.
Mobile programs meet an important need: providing programming for students who may face transportation difficulties, or whose school or after-school programs lack sufficient staffing or budget to support offsite field trips. For mobile programs, we "bring the workshop to them" -- bringing along exhibits, hands-on activities, and even some of our animals to provide the full workshop experience.
If you are able, we hope you will consider donating this year as we continue expand programs like our mobile program to meet community need.

Our new STEM Library Program
This year, we launched a brand new program: our STEM Library program for middle school students. The purpose of this program is to reach middle schoolers, who often are not able to take field trips to our workshops due to middle school schedules. We wanted to provide continuity for middle schoolers who used to visit our workshops for science enrichment as elementary school students -- so we have brought the workshop to middle school libraries!
In this program, we set up "mini mobile workshops" within six different middle school libraries, so students can visit on their lunch breaks to participate in hands-on science activities. So far this year, we have led middle schoolers in extracting DNA from strawberries, building mushroom terrariums, making liquid nitrogen ice cream, building DIY motor fans or creating their own LED lamps.
It's been a great experience re-engaging with former workshop students, and maintaining continuity for excitement and curiosity in science throughout their middle school years. Once the middle schoolers reach high school, they will have the opportunity to apply for paid internship programs in our workshops and turn their science experience and excitement into mentorship!
Environmental Justice After-School Program
We also launched our Environmental Justice after-school program at our Bayview site this year -- where students perform hands-on experiments designed to learn more about their local environment, and how they can become environmental stewards in their own communities. So far this year, our Bayview students have built soil sample collectors, built wind turbines, created Bay Area models studying sea level rise, and performed soil and water tests. It's been an awesome experience engaging students in conversations about our environment and its changes-- and highlighting Bayview-Hunter's Point as an important area for environmental stewardship, as it has historically suffered from degradation.
Bayview students have enjoyed learning more about their area, and getting out to local parks to collect water and soil samples, and fancying themselves local environment experts!
Road to $50,000 - have you donated yet?
Community: we are calling on your support this holiday season as we set our goals high to raise $50,000 towards providing free science programs for our incredibly deserving youth. All of your donations go directly towards subsidizing the costs of our field trips, after-school and mobile programs for local students.
If you are able, please consider donating today.
