Senior Morning is this Thursday

Enjoy an intimate guided walking tour to stroll around Zoo grounds in the morning hours before the Zoo opens to the general public! Our free Senior Mornings event was created for our senior-level members and takes place on the first Thursday of every month, starting at 9 a.m. (The fee for non-member seniors 65 and over is $10 per person, parking included).

One of the coolest things about this special tour is the opportunity to observe animals that are active early in the day, as they start their mornings too! You’ll be able to ask questions to a docent guide, who will also offer fascinating insight into animal behavior and more!

Little Puffer is Back on (a longer) Track!

We are thrilled to announce the return of our Little Puffer miniature steam train after a hiatus, during which we extended the track by 1,000 feet! This expanded train experience now takes riders on a journey around the eastern part of Bear Country and the upper lake in addition to pass-throughs of the multi-species South American exhibit, Puente al Sur, the Prehistoric  Garden, and more! Consistently voted as one of the Top 10 favorite things to do at the Zoo, the return of our historic Little Puffer train has been highly anticipated!

This is the first major renovation of the train since 1998 when it was fully restored thanks to the generosity of the Goldman family after it was placed in storage for 25 years. Little Puffer first arrived at the Zoo in 1925 and operated for 50 years before it was moved to make room for animal habitats. That renovation included a new steam locomotive, new passenger cars, new tracks and a depot. As we forward, you will also have an opportunity ride the train with a new diesel-powered engine, which will operate in place of Little Puffer on occasion. The new, bright green engine is nicknamed “Cobby” after our late, beloved male chimpanzee.

Little Puffer operates from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Tickets are $7 per person, per ride and can be purchased at the Little Puffer Depot. Be advised that the train does not operate during inclement weather.

The Ulti-Mutt Experience is Back in January!

Our next tail-wagging Dog Days at SF Zoo will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2025! For the safety of our animals, staff and guests, only a limited number of dogs can be on-site at any one time, so guests are required to reserve a time in advance to come with their dog.

Interested individuals must email during an announced timeframe to dogdays at sfzoo.org to be eligible for a random drawing to select attendees. Please email with the following information on  January 8, 9 & 10 to be considered for participation. You will be notified on January 10th after noon if you are selected to be placed on our reservation list.

• Dog breed
• Coat color
• Size (small, medium, large)

Dogs are free with paid guest admission or Zoo Membership. Guests are allowed one dog per reservation and each dog must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age. Learn more (https://www.sfzoo.org/special-programs/) .

On January 11th, we will welcome Tiny Paws Pet Rescue (https://www.tinypawspugrescue.org/) who will share information and adoptable pugs and pug mixes. You might just meet your new best friend!
