Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements SF Celebrates Reopening of Golden Gate Park Golf Course Clubhouse Last week, Mayor London Breed, Rec and Park and community stakeholders celebrated the reopening and unveiling of the Golden Gate Park Golf Course and Clubhouse. In 2018, the Golf Course’s clubhouse sustained extensive damage in a fire, leading to the building’s demolition. The course closed last year, as construction on the $5.9 million clubhouse project got underway. The new and completely redesigned 1,500 square-foot clubhouse features a multifunctional lounge, as well as enhanced public restrooms, a new golf pro shop, food and beverage concessions, additional storage space, and an outdoor patio with seating that overlooks the course. Other improvements include two accessible parking spaces and an ADA pathway that connects the outdoor patio to the putting greens and driving range. The new clubhouse was constructed on the same footprint as the previous structure. San Francisco Public Works played a significant role in the clubhouse project, providing architectural, landscape architectural and engineering design services, as well as managing construction, on behalf of Rec and Park. First Tee, a nonprofit organization that empowers youth with life and social skills through golf, has operated the course for the last decade. The organization provides programming for underserved youth. As part of a separate project funded entirely by First Tee, the 9-hole par-3 golf course recently underwent landscaping upgrades to strengthen the natural turf while facilitating drainage and reducing maintenance. Golden Gate Heights Park Share Feedback on Gene Friend Art Proposals by March 1 The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) is conducting a review process to choose an artist to create an integrated wall artwork for the interior north-facing wall of the gymnasium at the new Gene Friend Recreation Center. Three artists were chosen as finalists by a public art review panel to design site-specific proposals for this artwork opportunity: Adrian Arias, Cece Carpio, and ChiChai Mateo. The artwork should illuminate the rich history and full diversity of San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood including recognition of SOMA Pilipinas, the Filipino Cultural Heritage District. The artwork should also lift up the facility as a destination and proud neighborhood asset. SFAC has extended the deadline to provide feedback to Friday, March 1 at 5 p.m. Click the link below to review the artwork proposals. Art Proposals for Gene Friend Rec Center 11th and Natoma Park Community Meeting on March 7 In partnership with community organizations from the SoMa neighborhood, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is taking proposals for the naming of a new park located within western SoMa at the intersection of 11th and Natoma streets. This initiative aims to involve the community in selecting a meaningful and appropriate name that resonates with the park's location, historical significance, or honors an individual's contributions to the SoMa community. Take this survey to provide feedback on the submitted names and participate in the third and final community meeting on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. For more information, click the link below. 11th & Natoma Naming Proposals Kezar Pavilion Renovation Project Community Meeting on March 12 Rec and Park, in partnership with the Department of Emergency Management, will be hosting a community meeting for the Kezar Pavilion Renovation Project on Tuesday, March 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Police Department's Park Station (1899 Waller Street) community room. Kezar Pavilion Project People of the Parks: Lunar New Year Basketball Jamboree Kenny has been a longtime fixture at the Betty Ann Ong Recreation Center. He’s been organizing the annual Lunar New Year Basketball Jamboree since 1995, bringing kids together from across the city to shoot hoops and win prizes. The Jamboree—held this past Saturday—is part of the Alaska Airlines Chinese New Year Festival and Parade festivities leading up to this weekend’s big parade. “It’s not a tournament. It’s really supposed to be a fun event. But kids are really competitive so of course they all want to win,” he said. Kenny, a retired middle school principal, grew up in Chinatown and used to play basketball at the rec center when he was a kid—back when it was called the Chinese Recreation Center. The entire facility got a state-of-the-art upgrade in 2012 and was renamed to honor San Francisco flight attendant and 9/11 hero Betty Ann Ong, the first person to alert authorities to the hijackings. From sports to after-school programming, to activities for seniors, “there’s a multitude of activities here for people to participate in,” Kenny said. And when he’s not helping with the Basketball Jamboree and parade, you might catch Kenny, 71, shooting hoops on the court. “The key is to always stay active,” he said. People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks. Anticipated to last into this weekend, experience the peak bloom of one of the most significant conservation collections of magnolias in the United States. Admire the sights and scents on the branches of more than 200 elegant trees, as velvety silver buds and saucer-sized pink, white, and magenta flowers make an appearance in this spectacular annual bloom. For more information, click the link below. Magnificent Magnolias Park Padel at Embarcadero Plaza Check out Park Padel's new one-year pop-up courts located in Embarcadero Plaza! Padel, frequently described as a cross between tennis and squash, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Like pickleball, padel is easy to learn, social, and usually played as a doubles game on a court about a third of the size of a tennis court. However, padel courts are bounded by glass walls, allowing players to hit the ball off multiple surfaces, much like squash. Free play with advanced reservation takes place Monday through Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information and to make a reservation, click the link below. Park Padel Severe Storm Impacts in our Parks San Francisco is in the midst of some wet and windy weather that is expected to pick back up this weekend.
