New Baird's Tapir is Doing Great!

Our new Baird’s tapir has quickly adjusted to his new home at Puente al Sur and has become a favorite among his caretakers. He can often be found exploring his exhibit, leading the way with his distinctive snout, smelling for scattered produce or novel browse around the yard. With a personality that is calm and relaxed, he is rarely in a hurry, carefully planting his feet with each step as he traverses around. He also enjoys nose-to-nose time with his neighbor, "Evita" the giant anteater, and is eager to participate in training sessions with his keepers. Favorite foods include coprosma, apple, pear and broccoli. Aquatic by nature, tapirs love pools and are great swimmers. So far, he's taken several deep dives into his large pool but prefers to just dip his feet in most of the time, see if you can see him swimming!
UPCOMING IN JANUARY
National Bird Day
Local photographer May Woon captured a rare photo of this delicate shorebird, called the Greater yellowlegs, in December (pictured), which had not been spotted here for a while. We celebrate all of our resident bird species on National Bird Day, and especially our wild and migratory species, who can be spotted throughout the Zoo, from our various lakes to the wonderful themed gardens, like Gail's Fragrance Garden.

National Bird Day takes place on January 5th every year as a way to raise awareness and honor the many bird species in the U.S. and beyond. For groups like the Avian Welfare Coalition, this national day spotlights birds bred as pets or taken as part of the illegal trade of native wild species, decimating wild populations. Here, we are a permanent home to exotic parrots confiscated and placed here by U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and they are among the lucky ones. Celebrate National Bird Day by supporting conservation organizations that work to protect birds in the wild.

Save the Eagles Day
Each year on January 10th, the more than 60 species of eagles are celebrated on National Save the Eagles Day, as these majestic birds of prey found around the world are honored. Here in the U.S., you're familiar, of course, with the California bald eagle - the resurgence of which on the Channel Islands was a conservation success story we are proud to have spearheaded with the Institute for Wildlife Studies. This breed and release program resulted in the repopulation of over 100 eagles from 1985 to 2007, and led to the bald eagle's delisting from the Endangered Species List in 2007. You can see our own eagle resident, "Sierra," our non-releasable female Golden eagle, who recently celebrated her 26th birthday! She has served as an amazing ambassador for Golden eagles as part of our Animal Rescue & Conservation Center (ARC), teaching millions of guests over the years the resilience of this species, where one of the largest wild populations can be found in the greater Bay Area.
