Happy new year, everybody! We hope your 2024 is filled with magic, science, and wonder -- and you learn new things that you never thought possible. Our 2023 was certainly filled with wonder, and we can't wait to learn and experience even more with our community.

** Highlights of 2023
------------------------------------------------------------
In January, we realized a long-standing dream of ours by opening a third new workshop site in the Bayview-Hunter's Point District. Our longtime partners Charles Drew Preparatory Academy welcomed us into their space and we were able to create a workshop site within their school. The first month of the year, we began to welcome classrooms from Charles Drew Elementary and community organizations from all over the neighborhood into our workshop space for field trip and after-school programs. By mid March we expanded to many other schools in the Bayview as well as launched several offsite programs in our partner schools and community based organizations. Students and teachers love the opportunity to engage with science in a hands-on way right in their backyard and we could not be more thrilled to be part of this amazing community.

At the beginning of 2023 we also hosted our walk-through Blood Vessel exhibit launch! We hosted a special Blood Vessel-themed Saturday program at our Excelsior workshop -- inviting the community to explore our awe-inspiring Giant Blood Vessel exhibit as well as eating blood-themed snacks, viewing arterial cells under the microscope, performing heart dissections, doing an anatomical themed scavenger hunt, and much more. Since then we have taken our Blood Vessel to several schools and community centers like Mission High this Fall where we had a full week teaching and exploring with Mission High Biology and Health students or the South San Francisco Community Center Inauguration!
We have expanded our Saturday programs, where everyone is welcome to visit our science workshop, for free, to build projects, explore our exhibits and animals, tinker, and learn. Since March we have hosted monthly open Saturday events at our Bayview site and not only offer exiting free hands on science but also delicious food and snacks. They have been a hit with the community and we are excited to continue offering THREE open and free Saturdays across our workshops every month and also weekly Tinker Tuesdays (at Excelsior) and Tinker Thursdays (at Mission).
2023 was an incredible year of science exploration and community. In addition to the grand new exhibit and new workshop site, we were able to expand our impact in Oakland and South San Francisco, bring our real gray whale skeleton program to many new schools, grow our staff and our paid high school internship program and attend many community events all around the Bay with exciting, engaging hands-on science.

** January Open Saturday Programs
------------------------------------------------------------
Please stop by any of our workshops for free and fun hands-on science exploration for the whole family. We have three Saturdays per month to choose from and also weekly Tuesday and Thursday afternoon drop-ins starting next week.

** Intern Highlight
------------------------------------------------------------
Our intern Xitlaly, in the middle.
Xitlaly is one of our wonderful high school interns, based in our Excelsior workshop. In her younger years, Xitlaly first experienced the workshop through visiting with her Monroe Elementary classroom for field trips, and she realized the workshop is where she feels safe and happy and free to explore and experiment.

Xitlaly began her internship with us last year, and works as a teaching assistant for after-school programs and open community days, helping out at both our Excelsior and Bayview workshops. She loves to tinker and create new exhibits, introduce students and families to our animals, and was instrumental in the creation of the Giant Blood Vessel exhibit.

"The workshop is like a door into a new world -- where I can explore and learn about interesting things I never knew were possible."
Please keep in mind that our programs would not be possible without your contribution. If you can, please consider making a donation to keep engaging science programs accessible to all.
