Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Youth Stewardship Program 23/24 Annual Report Check out the annual report for our Youth Stewardship Program's (YSP) 23/24 season at this link. The free program in San Francisco runs from November through May of each year and engages youth and school groups, grades K to 12, in environmental education and service-learning field trips in parks citywide. The program's mission is to foster in youth an understanding of their important role in building healthy social and natural communities. In the past year, the program served more than 3,000 students, 77 educators and 35 schools through 101 field trips to 11 parks sites, as well as 53 class visits. Youth Stewardship Program SF Live: Union Square Concerts on June 13 and 15 Join SF Live for two free shows at Union Square (333 Post Street) this week. The first takes place on Thursday, June 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. and features Earl Thomas and Anthony Cullins. Thomas is a legend in the world of blues and soul, who's shared the spotlight with icons like BB King and Gladys Knight, while Cullins is a rising star known for his killer mix of R&B, funk, soul, rock, jazz and blues. On Saturday, June 15 from 1 to 9 p.m., we have a 50th Anniversary celebration of The EndUp, one of San Francisco’s most legendary clubs, as well as a San Francisco legacy business. SF Live Fest Yik Oi Huang Peace & Friendship Park Name Unveiling on June 15 Join community partners for the name unveiling celebration of Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park (251 Leland Avenue) on Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The name honors the memory of a neighborhood grandmother and community advocate who was tragically killed. The event will feature an unveiling ceremony at noon followed by a day of family-friendly activities, cultural performances and community healing. For more information, click the link below. Remember Yik Oi Huang Juneteenth and Father's Day Celebration on June 16 Join community partners for a Juneteenth and Father's Day celebration on Sunday, June 16 from noon to 6 p.m. at Gilman Playground (903 Gilman Avenue). The event will feature live music by chart-topping R&B group 112 and Grammy-winning songstress Regina Belle, among other performers. It will also feature local food and retail vendors, carnival rides, kids' activities, a car show and more. Bayview Juneteenth SF Live: Psych Rock Show at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater on June 16 Join SF Live in McLaren Park, where it will host its free Psych Rock show at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater on Sunday, June 16 from 1 to 6 p.m. It will feature WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc), the iconic Zamrock band from the 70s known for their explosive blend of rock, disco, and Zambian traditional music, as well as Bolero and James Wavey. Psych Rock in McLaren Park Monumental Reckoning Ceremony in Golden Gate Park on June 19 In honor of Juneteenth, we are hosting a special Monumental Reckoning ceremony and event on Wednesday, June 19 from 1 to 2 p.m. The event, in partnership with Illuminate, will take place at the site of the former statue of Francis Scott Key in the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse where the Monumental Reckoning art figures stood from 2021 to 2024. The art figures represented the first Africans stolen from their homeland and sold into chattel slavery in 1619. The 350 "Ancestors" encircled the vacant plinth of the slaveholder Francis Scott Key. This year, the organizers are looking for volunteers to be one of the 350+ Black women who will surround the empty plinth area for the event. All Black women are welcome, including trans women, as well as non-binary and gender fluid people. The time commitment for this volunteer role is from noon to 2 p.m. that day. Monumental Reckoning 2024 10th Annual Harvey Milk Art & Pride Exhibit; Opening Event June 22 Join the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts and Photo Center (50 Scott Street) for its 10th Annual Art and Pride exhibit, "Living Life Golden," with the opening celebration on Saturday, June 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. This annual community exhibit will feature artwork from more than 20 artists embracing life in the moment, individuality, breaking free from societal expectations and living life to the fullest. The opening event will be hosted by LOL McFiercen and will feature live drag performances at 7:30 p.m. For more information, click the link below. Living Life Golden Activity and Class Schedule for Civic Center Plazas Check out all of the amazing drop-in activities and scheduled classes available at the reimagined UN Plaza and surrounding Civic Center area. From the Heart of the City Farmers' Market and live music at Fulton Plaza to Flag Football at Civic Center Plaza starting in July, we have something for everyone to get out and play in San Francisco's core. Civic Center Plazas Call for Artists for India Basin Waterfront Park by June 14 The San Francisco Arts Commission is looking for two San Francisco-based Artists in Residence for the future India Basin Waterfront Park. Artists will work with the India Basin Waterfront Park project partners and Bayview-Hunters Point community to develop new works for the park. The deadline to apply has been extended to Friday, June 14 by 5 p.m. The total honorarium for each artist is $40,000. The production budget for each artist is $15,000. India Basin Call for Artists Sharp Park Detention Center Site Visit & Community Meeting on June 20 Please join the Sharp Park Detention Center Working Group for a community meeting to discuss the creation and installation of an interpretive panel at the park, and an optional visit to the former detention center site prior to the meeting. Sharp Park was a former detention center during World War II, housing detainees from Japanese, Italian and German descent as well as other foreign nationals. The visit and meeting will take place on Thursday, June 20 with the optional detention center site visit from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at the end of Rifle Range Road in Pacifica. Randolph and Bright Design Survey Open Through June 21 Rec and Park, in partnership with KABOOM!, will be making improvements to Randolph and Bright Mini Park, which will include a new children’s nature exploration area, paved areas, seating, plantings, and fencing. Randolph & Bright Improvement Project Annual Outside Lands Community Meeting on June 24 Join Rec and Park, Another Planet Entertainment, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, San Francisco Police Department, and district supervisors for the annual Outside Lands Music Festival community meeting on Monday, June 24 at 6 p.m. at the Golden Gate Park Senior Center (6101 Fulton Street). These diverse musical performances will be held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Thursday, June 13 from 2 to 5 p.m., we have Blues commuters, Brian Johnson, and Echo Beach Jazz Band. Illuminate Live Summer Birding for Families at the SF Botanical Garden on June 15 San Francisco Nature Education (SFNE) is hosting a summer bird walk field trip in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at the San Francisco Botanical Garden (1199 9th Avenue). Batters Up Guns Down San Francisco Fillmore Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 15 Join community partners for the Fillmore Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will take place on Fillmore Street between Geary Boulevard and Fulton Street and will feature a kids' zone, vendors, food, car show, live acts, fashion show and more! Fillmore Juneteenth The Whale's Tail Music Lineup for June 15 and 16 The Whale’s Tail, Golden Gate Park's seasonal watering hole, is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and select holidays all summer and will feature a revolving schedule of live music, as well as food trucks, street art and games. It is located at the 14th Avenue East Meadow just west of the Rose Garden on the JFK Promenade. The seasonal destination is a collaboration between Rec and Park, Non Plus Ultra, Illuminate, and SF Live. The Whale's Tail Golden Gate Park Band: Juneteenth & Father's Day Celebration June 16 Join the Golden Gate Park Band for its Juneteenth and Father's Day concert on Sunday, June 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Golden Gate Bandshell (75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive). This free concert will feature the music of a number of African American composers and artists, including a performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" which was written James Weldon Johnson. LoveDolores Anti Prom at UN Skate Plaza on June 22 Join BRUJAS and Le Vanguard for their fifth annual celebration of Anti Prom on Saturday, June 22 at UN Skate Plaza (355 McCallister Street) from 3 to 7 p.m. The event is dedicated to women and queer skaters, rap heads, club aficionados, and anybody who was ever kicked out of anything. Anti Prom Urban Viticulture Workshop at Potrero Hill Community Garden June 22 Join Rec and Park's Urban Agriculture team and the San Francisco Public Library for an Introduction to Urban Viticulture workshop on Saturday, June 22 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Potrero Hill Community Garden (780 San Bruno Avenue) next to McKinley Park. The workshop will be led by Christopher Renfro, co-owner of Friend of a Friend, a wine, spirits, scent, and spice shop. The clinic is for beginners and advanced players alike. The youth portion of the clinic for ages 6 to 18 will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, while the adult portion will take place from noon to 2 p.m. This event is a collaboration between Rec and Park, Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP), United States Tennis Association (USTA) Northern California, and Lifetime Activities. Rock Climbing Passes Bean Sprouts Family Days at the San Francisco Botanical Garden Join the San Francisco Botanical Garden (1199 9th Avenue) for Bean Sprouts Family Days on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon, and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Help start seeds and explore all of the growth that happened in the garden over winter. Grab some tools at the garden's welcome station or bring your own to dig, water, pick, build and explore. Heavy rain will cancel programs. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall). Let's get hooping! Sundays at the Beach on the Great Highway: Tai Chi on June 16 Join the Friends of Great Highway Park for its Sundays at the Beach programming. Great Highway Events Swing into Stories at Hilltop Park in Golden Gate Park on June 18 The San Francisco Public Library's (SFPL) YouthMobile is coming to parks around the city. Movement and play are essential building blocks in fostering literacy and a love of reading and the SFPL is bringing stories and song to San Francisco's parks through its Swing into Stories program. It takes place at a different park each Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The next in Bayview-Hunters Point will take place on June 18 at Hilltop Park (Newcomb Avenue and Whitney Young Circle). Join us for a high-energy storytime in our beautiful outdoors! The YouthMobile offers a diverse selection of children’s library materials available for check-out with an SFPL library card. From the city’s only kid-focused bookmobile, staff circulates materials, creates library cards and provides the public with information about library services and programs.
