Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements   Monumental Reckoning Reprised in Golden Gate Park for Juneteenth Monumental Reckoning, the groundbreaking temporary art installation that stood at Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse for more than two years before coming down earlier this year, returned to the park for a special Juneteenth celebration. In honor of the Juneteenth holiday, Rec and Park partnered with Bay Area artists Dana King and Mark Allan Davis to bring back the installation for a special one-day live exhibit featuring 50 Black women, both cis and trans, as well as Black nonbinary people. The celebration also included lively musical performances. During the event, the 50 participants stood in unison around the plinth where a statue of Francis Key Scott once stood. Participants and the audience then took part in a moment of silence, honoring the struggle for liberation endured by Black people across the diaspora. Monumental Reckoning was first installed in the park’s Music Concourse in June 2021—one day after President Joe Biden signed a resolution establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a U.S. holiday commemorating the end of slavery. The installation was a partnership between Rec and Park, the nonprofit organization Illuminate, and King. The installation consisted of 350 metal sculptures representing the first group of enslaved Africans who were brought against their will to the colonies in 1619. The sculptures, which stood 4-feet high, were placed surrounding the plinth of the former Francis Scott Key statue. Protestors toppled the statue the year prior, on Juneteenth of 2020. Key, who wrote the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner, was a slave owner and an opponent to the abolition movement. For this year’s Juneteenth holiday, King and Mark Allan Davis, who is also an associate professor of Black Studies at San Francisco State University, came to Rec and Park with the idea of bringing back a revamped, live version of the installation. When Monumental Reckoning was initially installed in the park in 2021, Illuminate installed a companion piece, the words “Lift Every Voice,” atop the historic Spreckels Temple of Music, also known as the Golden Gate Bandshell. The phrase is taken from the historic hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” written by civil rights advocate James Weldon Johnson. The song was dubbed the Black National Anthem by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1919. For more information, click the link below. Monumental Reckoning 2024   Rec & Park Moves to Expand Neighborhood Green Space in SoMa With a vision to expand green space in SoMa, Rec and Park will take the first step Thursday toward acquiring a commercial property at 240 6th Street. The 9,625 square foot parcel, which currently houses an auto shop, would be transformed into a park to augment the outdoor area of the new Gene Friend Recreation Center. Recreation and Park Commissioners on Thursday will vote on a resolution to recommend acquisition of the property, which includes a two-story building that currently houses Euro Motorcars. The Department proposes spending $7.1 million from the Open Space Acquisition Fund to buy the property and remediate it. The voter-approved fund addresses the City’s growing need for open space. In the past decade, Rec and Park has opened new parks across San Francisco. Among them are In Chan Kajaal in the Mission District, Noe Valley Town Square, Guy Place Mini Park in SoMa, and Francisco Park. Brand new parks currently under construction include India Basin Waterfront Park in the Bayview and 11th and Natoma in SoMa. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors must approve both the funding and purchase of the 6th Street property. If acquired, the new park would complement the $59 million renovation of the Eugene L. Friend Rec Center, which broke ground in February and will open in fall 2026. The new Gene Friend Rec Center will feature 50 percent more space for programming and recreation, a gymnasium with two full-size basketball courts, and a welcoming new entrance on Harriet Street. Expanding Green Space in SoMa   Yik Oi Huang Peace & Friendship Park Sign Unveiled at Celebration Thank you to everyone who came out for the sign unveiling celebration of Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park this past weekend. The name honors the memory of a neighborhood grandmother and community advocate who was tragically killed. Affectionately known to many as Grandma Huang, she served for more than 17 years as an ambassador for the Visitacion Valley Friendship Club, which offers senior services to the Chinese immigrant community. She was also a daily patron of this park, where for more than 20 years she walked around the perimeter and practiced Qigong. Learn more about her life and legacy at the link below. Remember Yik Oi Huang   Remembering San Francisco Giants Legend Willie Mays We were saddened to hear of the passing of baseball legend and iconic San Francisco Giants player Willie Mays. The "Say Hey Kid" is one of the best players of all-time who was a top tier hitter and base stealer, while also being considered the best centerfielder in Major League Baseball history. He served as a bridge for the Giants when they moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958 and came to dominate Candlestick Park, one of the more challenging stadiums to both hit and play outfield in. His playing style and ability inspired generations of baseball players. After his playing career, he served as an ambassador for the Giants, residing in the Bay Area and being a regular visitor to games. Mays had also supported the Mae Louise Mays Charity Softball Tournament, which was named for his late wife who was a social worker with the San Francisco Human Services Agency. The tournament supports foster youth and features teams from government agencies and community organizations competing for the trophy. This tournament returns this Saturday, June 22 to Moscone Field after a pandemic hiatus. We're grateful to Mays for inspiring generations of San Franciscans, and supporting youth and recreation, even after his passing. Read more about Mays' life from the Giants at the link below.
