Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements 16th Annual William Hammond Hall Awards Honor Rec & Park Staff Congratulations to the 12 recipients of this year’s William Hammond Hall Awards, who were celebrated by Mayor London Breed and her Chief of Staff Sean Elsbernd, City Administrator Carmen Chu, members of the Recreation and Park Commission, colleagues, and union leaders at a ceremony at McLaren Lodge last week. The Recreation and Park Commission established the awards by resolution in 2007. The awards are hosted by the Commission and named for William Hammond Hall, the father of Golden Gate Park, in recognition of his vision for public parks and his understanding of how parks improve our health, happiness, and sense of community. The award recipients' contributions and commitment to our parks are a reflection of what Hall embodied and recognize the excellent work of our staff in stewarding our city's parkland. This year, we also presented the first-ever Dennis Kern Leadership Award, named for our late Director of Operations who passed away late last year. The award is given to a staff member who embodies Denny's leadership spirit, demonstrating qualities such as collaboration, innovation, resilience, and supportiveness. These are just some of the many characteristics that defined Denny and continue to inspire us all. Thank you to our award winners for all that you do for San Francisco and our parks! A special thanks to the event co-sponsors LiUNA!, Local 261; UA Local 38 Plumbers, Steamfitters and HVAC/R; and the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council for making this awards ceremony possible. Rec & Park Hosts Park Delegation from Mexico Last week, Rec and Park welcomed a group of 35 park professionals from Mexico as part of La Asociación Nacional de Parques y Recreación de México’s annual conference, providing the group with an inside look at places like the Palace of Fine Arts, Golden Gate Park, Palega Recreation Center, India Basin Waterfront Park and more. Cultural exchanges with our international counterparts are paramount to the work we do, highlighting the importance of parks and public spaces and their impact on people’s daily lives, no matter what part of the world they’re from. By learning from each other, we can develop innovative strategies to enhance our parks and public spaces, ensuring they remain vibrant and inclusive for all!
