Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Repairs Begin on Historic Trocadero Clubhouse Construction began last week to repair the iconic Trocadero Clubhouse in Sigmund Stern Grove. The San Francisco Historical Landmark, long a popular spot for weddings and events, was severely damaged last year when a storm toppled an 85-foot eucalyptus tree, partially crushing its roof and triggering a deluge from its interior sprinkler system. The work to restore the Trocadero to its historic condition is extensive. Workers will replace the roof, rafters, eave, cupola, framing, windows, walls, finishes, wood molding, floors and lights, while salvaging as much original material as possible. The $2.5 million project is being funded through Rec and Park’s general fund, with an expected reimbursement through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Rec and Park is partnering with San Francisco Public Works for construction management and engineering. Architectural Resources Group handling conservation and preservation from damage assessment through construction. The Trocadero Clubhouse is expected to reopen to the public by the end of 2024. Repairs Begin on Trocadero Clubhouse Remembering Photographer & Civil Rights Advocate David Johnson We’re heartbroken to learn that renowned San Francisco photographer and civil rights advocate David Johnson, 97, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024. David studied under acclaimed photographers Ansel Adams and Minor White, and through his photography David shed light on the city’s vibrant Black community in the Fillmore, capturing the neighborhood’s jazz era and pivotal moments during the civil rights movement. David received numerous accolades for his work, with his pieces featured at the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. The Harvey Milk Photography Center in San Francisco’s Duboce Park honored David’s contributions by naming both the library and the processing lab after him. The Harvey Milk Photo Center operates the oldest and largest community wet darkroom in the nation, serving the public since 1940. To see some of Johnson’s work, click the link below. As a part of this experience, 20 of the girls were able to take the court to play at halftime, with Rec and Park Commissioner Joe Hallisy announcing each player's name. Girls Sports People of the Parks: Sharon Art Studio After moving back to the Bay Area from Los Angeles, Elizabeth was looking for an art space to continue her passion of creating stained glass. At Sharon Art Studio in Golden Gate Park, she found a supportive space filled with diverse and likeminded artists. “The building is beautiful and just being in the energy of the space will pique any artist’s curiosity,” Elizabeth said. “While working on my glass on Thursday nights you can hear the pounding of jewelry makers upstairs, or peek into the ceramics studio downstairs and see all the wonderful things being created.” Now a four-year veteran at the studio, Elizabeth has explored classes in many mediums but has clung to stained glass, recently completing her first commissioned piece. She noted that while the materials and expertise provided are invaluable to experienced artists, it’s also a place for anyone interested in exploring art. “It’s impressive,” she said. “From the teachers to the fellow students, everyone is extremely welcoming, which is rewarding.” Although Elizabeth has spread her talents to other art spaces, Sharon Art is her favorite. “I will come here forever,” she said. “It’s an inclusive environment. Regardless of finances or background, anyone can find a home here.” People of the Parks is a series of short stories based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks.
