Its expert panel selected Golden Gate Park as a contender for Best City Park. The contest gives people a chance to vote for the candidate of their choice through Monday, April 8 at 9 a.m. PT. Learn more about the park and plan your next visit at this link. 10Best: City Parks   Interactive Theatrical Performance Returns to Golden Gate Park After selling out last year, the groundbreaking theater company We Players is bringing back their hit performance “Adventures with Alice” to Golden Gate Park this April. The witty and whimsical production in which audience members follow performers through key locations in Golden Gate Park during the performance kicks off on April 24, and will run through June 2 for a total of 18 shows. While strolling through the park along with performers, audience members will be immersed in the story and the scenery. The production leads the audience on a 1-mile exploration through the park to places such as Lindley Meadow, Hellman Hollow, JFK Drive, and Portals of the Past at Lloyd Lake. The story is a mash-up of the books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass,” both written by Lewis Carroll. Audience members will enjoy seeing familiar characters such as Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Hare, and the Red Queen, among others, as they jaunt through the iconic city park. We Players in Golden Gate Park   Rec & Park General Manager Reelected to Lead State Parks Commission Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg has been reelected to chairperson of the California State Parks and Recreation Commission. Ginsburg was unanimously elected to the position by his fellow California State Parks and Recreation commissioners at their March 7 meeting. This marks Ginsburg’s second consecutive term as chairperson of the California State Parks and Recreation Commission. Governor Gavin Newsom first appointed Ginsburg to the commission in 2019 and reappointed him in 2022. Ginsburg has also served as vice chairperson. Ginsburg has led SF Rec and Park since 2009 and will continue to bring his expertise in overseeing one of the most innovative park systems in the country to the California State Parks and Recreation Commission. Spring Fling   SFGATE: What Urban Coyotes are Really Eating in San Francisco Check out the recent article by SFGATE which profiles coyotes in San Francisco, and points out that they're eating more human food than previously thought. It emphasizes the importance of not feeding urban wildlife, while also discussing the ecological services that coyotes provide, such as controlling rodent populations, increasing biodiversity and dispersing native plant seeds. Coyotes in our Parks   Women's Winter Adult Volleyball League Crowns a New Champion A special shout out to the winners of our women's winter adult volleyball league, team Dippin' Dots! They came out as champions in a league made up of 10 teams, with the playoffs and championship taking place at Palega Recreation Center. This Women's History Month, we'd like to recognize this league, and the women that make it thrive. Providing a place for recreation, exercise and community, the league has been around for more then a decade, originating at Richmond Recreation Center. Due to demand, it has since expanded to Sunset and Palega recreation centers, and to serving San Franciscans year round. Padel, frequently described as a cross between tennis and squash, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Like pickleball, padel is easy to learn, social, and usually played as a doubles game on a court about a third of the size of a tennis court. However, padel courts are bounded by glass walls, allowing players to hit the ball off multiple surfaces, much like squash. Ikebana, or Japanese flower arrangement, is an ancient Asian art vibrantly practiced in contemporary interpretations by this organization's members. There will be fresh flower arrangements, ceramics, and Ikebana supplies for sale, along with four silent auctions. It takes place on Saturday, March 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Noe Valley Branch Library (451 Jersey Street). This talk, which includes historical photographs, will reveal the stories of the creation of some of San Francisco's parks. From the town square of Portsmouth Square to the formerly bayside Gilman Playground, previously known as Gilman Beach, the illustrations show the diverse topography of San Francisco. Tennis & Flag Football Play Day   Cesar Chavez Day Celebration at Glen Park Rec Center on March 26 Ahead of Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, join the Community Living Campaign and Rec and Park for a celebration of this pioneering labor leader and civil rights activist. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 26 from noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Canyon Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street). It will feature a talk about Chavez by journalist Emil Guillermo, as well as a taste of a Mexican vegetarian dish. The second of the year will take place on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free compost, mulch, plant starts and seeds, as well as a tool care station. Compost will be limited to five 5-gallon buckets per household– bring your own buckets. Additionally, University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers will be on site to answer your gardening questions! These events will take place at the overflow parking lot at Gleneagles Golf Course (2100 Sunnydale Avenue), adjacent to the McLaren Bike Park. Civic Center Plazas   "Bodies of Work" Exhibit at Harvey Milk Photo Center Through April 20 Check out the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott Street) and its "Bodies of Work" exhibit. It is curated by Katinka Herbert and examines the commodification of athletic bodies through a compelling dialogue between two projects centered on Mexican wrestlers and Cuban athletes. It serves as a poignant exploration of precarious labor, freezing lives that typically unfold through movement within the stillness of photographic frames. Bodies of Work   Bean Sprout Family Days at the San Francisco Botanical Garden Join the San Francisco Botanical Garden (1199 9th Avenue) for Bean Sprout Family Days on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon, and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Help start seeds and explore all of the growth that happened in the garden over winter. McLaren Park Ropes Course   Black History Month Celebration Recap Video Our Video of the Week comes from Hip Hop for Change (HH4C) and recaps last month's Black History Month community celebration at the Southeast Community Center. HH4C organized a number of workshops and performances at the event, which served as an opportunity to preview their programing that will be hosted at India Basin Shoreline Park this spring as a part of the India Basin Waterfront Park project.
