Spring Fling Volo Field Day to Replace 420 Festival in Golden Gate Park This Year The City’s annual 420 festival will not be held in Golden Gate Park next month, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and event organizer Sounds Bazaar announced this week. The festival, a celebration of cannabis culture, has traditionally drawn large crowds to Golden Gate Park’s Robin Williams Meadow, including Hippie Hill. The cancellation of this year's event is the result of two key factors: economic challenges within the cannabis industry, making sponsorships hard to secure, and City budget cuts impacting Rec and Park's ability to cover staffing for the event. 420 organizers and park officials stressed there won’t be a stage or live music or cannabis booths in Golden Gate Park like in previous years, encouraging revelers to skip the trip and instead celebrate 420 in a place that’s special and local to them. To keep the park active for the community on this day, Rec and Park has partnered with Volo Sports to run the first annual Peace, Love and Volo Field Day on April 20 in Robin Williams Meadow and Hippie Hill, which will feature volleyball and kickball tournaments. The day is devoted to sports, friendship, and fun in honor of Earth Day. Additionally, the first ever SF Weed Week arrives in San Francisco Sunday, April 13 and runs through April 23—bringing thousands of Bay Area smokers and tourists a lineup of seven nights of seven top-shelf growers premiering seven world-class strains at seven world-class San Francisco lounges. Learn more and sign up to participate in these alternative activities at the link below. 420 in GGP Canceled SF Kicks Off Bay FC Inaugural Season With Civic Center Celebration This week, Mayor London Breed, Rec and Park, city leaders, and soccer fans helped to kick off Bay Football Club's (Bay FC) inaugural season and home opening match with a fun celebration at Civic Center Plaza. Bay FC is the first National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team in the Bay Area. The celebration in San Francisco comes ahead of the team’s first home game, which takes place on Saturday, March 30 at the Bay FC’s current home stadium, PayPal Park in San Jose. The team is set to face off against the Houston Dash. Tickets for Bay FC games can be purchased at bayfc.com. Following the rally, Bay FC players made time to sign autographs for soccer fans, including soccer players from youth leagues Bayview United, Saint Philip School, America SCORES, Margaret Hayward Afterschool Program, and Girls Got Goals (Jamestown Community Center). The young players joined the America SCORES team for soccer drills, scrimmages, and other activities at the mini soccer fields located in Civic Center. During the event, Bay FC, Sixth Street, and the U.S. Soccer Foundation announced their partnership with Rec and Park to build a mini-pitch, which is a customized, hard-court surface made for soccer programming and pick-up games. The new play space will be built in a City park that is still being decided. Once installed, the mini-pitch will provide children and adults interested in playing soccer with a safe place to learn and play. Bay FC is the 14th team to join the NWSL, which is currently in its 12th season. For more information, click the link below. Padel, frequently described as a cross between tennis and squash, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Like pickleball, padel is easy to learn, social, and usually played as a doubles game on a court about a third of the size of a tennis court. However, padel courts are bounded by glass walls, allowing players to hit the ball off multiple surfaces, much like squash. Free play with advanced reservation takes place Monday through Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information and to make a reservation, click the link below.
