Meet our new Mojave Desert Tortoise!
The Zoo recently accepted a new rescue animal--a three-legged Mojave desert tortoise. Desert tortoises were recently listed as an Endangered Species in California, as their populations are shrinking by roughly 1% annually. Although they can live for up to 80 years, tortoises are vulnerable to drought, wildfires, encroaching development, and collisions with cars and off-road vehicles.
Our little survivor was taken in by the Department of Fish and Wildlife and is estimated to be around 25 years old. She may have lost her leg to predation but tortoises do better than many quadrupeds when they lose a limb because their sturdy shell helps them to support their bodies. She is currently receiving medical care at the Zoo Hospital and once she has passed her quarantine period, she will come to live at the Zoo’s Animal Rescue and Conservation Center (ARC) where she will help teach Zoo visitors about the importance of protecting wildlife. With an impressive survivor story and a lively personality, she is already a staff favorite.
