Digital Membership Cards and Expanded Benefits

At San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, it is our mission to connect people with wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action. We are walking the walk in our conservation efforts and announcing the switch to Digital Membership Cards throughout all levels of our membership program.

By using Digital Membership Cards we are committing to a more environmentally sustainable operation, as plastic cards, ink cartridges, and paper supplies will be drastically reduced from circulation. The positive impact this change will have on our ecosystem greatly serves our community and will benefit generations of Zoo Members and Guardians to come.

What to Expect

On Monday May 20, you will receive an email from the Zoo that contains a link to download your new membership card. Your card will be accessible in either your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet phone apps.

The front of your card will have the names of the people who are included in your membership and the “Pass Details” will include your benefit information, so you always know how to get the most of your daily experiences at the Zoo. This card is your new membership credential and is what you will need to present to the Guest Services Representatives when entering the Zoo.  You will be able to share this card through your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet apps with the other people who are covered under your membership for easy access without the hassle of physical cards.  There is no charge for Digital Membership Cards.

Is my Current Physical Card Still Valid?
Yes, you can still use your physical cards as proof of membership until your membership expires. Once you renew your membership, a new digital card will be issued to the email address that is associated with your membership. At that point, your physical cards will no longer be valid and you can recycle them. You will not, however, receive new physical cards with your renewed membership. During the time period that you have the Digital Membership Card and the physical card, you can use either for entry into the Zoo.

What if I want Physical Cards?
If you prefer physical cards, you can obtain them at the Zoo’s ticket box office located at the entrance of the Zoo. There is a $10 fee for printing physical cards. You will still be issued a Digital Membership Card regardless of your possession of physical cards.

If you are a Guardian, you will still receive physical cards in the benefit packet. Obtaining them at the ticket window is not necessary.

Expanded Benefits
If you are a Member in the Individual, Family, Family Plus, Senior, Supporting, and Maki levels you will notice some changes to your member benefits that are listed in “Pass Details” of the Digital Membership Card. We are changing the benefits to certain levels of membership to further reduce the use of paper passes, such as physical Carousel Passes.  Instead, we have extended benefits that can be accessed year-long instead of just one-time.

Here is a breakdown of those benefit changes:

⇨ Single-Use Carousel Passes ($4 value) are now replaced with $1 off ALL RIDES year-long (unlimited value). You will now have daily member discounts at the Little Puffer Train and the Virtual Reality Experience.

⇨ Single-Use Guest Passes are now replaced with a $5 discount on admission tickets that aren’t covered in your membership. This results in greater savings throughout the year instead of a one-time benefit.

⇨ Maki level members will now receive $5 off VIP Guided Tours and two (2) free Zoo Keys in addition to their regular benefits. The Maki level membership is being renamed the Madagascar Membership, which you will see on your Digital Membership Card.

If you still have physical passes for the carousel, parking and for guest entry, you can still redeem those for their respective benefits, but also enjoy the new benefits as well.

Guardian level members will still receive physical passes as part of their benefit program.

What if I am a Guardian?
Guardians will still receive their lanyards and Guardian cards, as well as the physical passes that are currently a benefit of that membership level. A Digital Guardian Card will still be distributed via email and you will have the choice to use either as proof of Guardianship.

Guardians will also receive additional benefits of:
⇨ $5 off VIP Guided Tours
⇨ Two (2) Free Zoo Keys
