Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Golden Gate Park’s Seasonal Watering Hole is Back with a Cocktail Twist Prepare to dive into summer fun as The Whale’s Tail, Golden Gate Park’s seasonal watering hole, surfaces once again on the JFK Promenade beginning on Saturday, May 25. Formerly known as the Beer and Wine Garden, this beloved spot for al fresco fun will now include brunch cocktails on its menu alongside its traditional beer and wine offerings. The Whale’s Tail—a new name inspired by the nearby Street Whale art installation, is child-friendly, dog-friendly, and bike-friendly. It will feature a revolving schedule of live music, as well as food trucks, street art and games. The seasonal destination is a collaboration between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, Non Plus Ultra, Illuminate, and SF Live. The Whale’s Tail will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and select holidays (including this coming Monday) all summer. It is located at the 14th Avenue East Meadow just west of the Rose Garden on the JFK Promenade. For more information, click the link below. The Whale's Tail India Basin Waterfront Park Project 2024 Progress Update The India Basin Waterfront Park project partners, made up of the Trust for Public Land, San Francisco Parks Alliance, A. Philip Randolph Institute, and Bayview-Hunters Point community, are proud to share our progress report for the project as we near the opening of the first half of the park. The report gives an update on where we are in the construction and highlights our work implementing the project's Equitable Development Plan. The landmark plan, a first for San Francisco, ensures this waterfront park will benefit current Bayview-Hunters Point residents while preserving the culture and identity of the historic neighborhood. It provides a blueprint for delivering a park designed by and for the community while improving economic opportunity and environmental health for its residents. Highlights include the graduation of 16 community members from the project's workforce development program, the Bayview Safety Swim and Splash program helping more than 100 youth participants become water safe, the opening of the Community Innovation Lab at India Basin Shoreline Park and much more! Read the full report at the link below. India Basin 2024 Progress Update New Program Ready to Set Sail at India Basin Waterfront Park When the first portion of the India Basin Waterfront Park Project opens to the public at 900 Innes Ave. later this year, the nonprofit Rocking the Boat will take the helm of nautical learning, teaching young people and community members to build boats, row, sail, and restore the waterfront. Recreation and Park commissioners last week selected the youth development organization to provide programming in Bayview-Hunters Point, including afterschool boatbuilding courses; rowing and local marine ecology education; summer jobs and job readiness training; STEM field exploration and more. Programming addresses four of the six areas of focus for the project's Equitable Development Plan, which ensures that the waterfront park will benefit current Bayview-Hunters Point residents while preserving the culture and identity of the historic neighborhood. Currently under construction, the India Basin Waterfront Park project will combine the existing India Basin Shoreline Park area and property at 900 Innes Avenue into one grand 10-acre waterfront park. Rocking the Boat will be based at the Shop Building in the 900 Innes portion of the park, which is slated to open in late 2024 as the second of three phases of the larger project. The program also pays homage to the park’s rich maritime history. Shipwright’s Cottage (San Francisco landmark 250), which is currently being renovated as a part of the 900 Innes portion of the project, was occupied by shipwrights that built scow schooners at the park site from approximately 1875 until 1926. Funding for this program comes from the project budget, which earmarked $15 million for the implementation of Equitable Development Plan programming, as well as the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families. Rocking the Boat at India Basin San Francisco's Park System Ranks Among the Best in the Country The Trust for Public Land's annual ParkScore Index was released earlier today, and San Francisco's parks ranked among the best in the nation! Rankings are based on five factors: park access, park equity, park acreage, park investment, and park amenities. Each category was evaluated on a scale of 100 points. We received perfect scores for access and investment, while our dog parks and bathrooms received perfect scores for abundance. Rec and Park provides San Franciscans with more than 230 of the City’s 495 parks. We invest 60 percent of our capital dollars in equity zones, neighborhoods that faced past environmental injustice that today make up 20 percent of our overall park acreage. This includes India Basin Waterfront Park, one of the largest park projects in modern San Francisco history. The first half of the park is anticipated to open in late 2024 at 900 Innes Avenue, and will serve Bayview-Hunters Point, one of the more diverse neighborhoods in the city that also features one of the highest concentration of youth 19 and under. Volunteer Programs People of the Parks: Sundown Cinema Crowds of people packed Dolores Park this past Friday for the first Sundown Cinema of the year. The popular free San Francisco summertime event kicked off with a screening of the hit movie Selena—which chronicles the life of the late Tejana singer. Donning her best Selena costume, San Francisco drag artist Per Sia hosted the event—which included drag performances and a sing-along to the film’s musical numbers. “There’s hundreds of people here.” Per Sia said. “That’s the power of Selena. She brings community together.” Per Sia—a die-hard Selena fan—has performed as Selena in the past. Grateful for another opportunity, Per Sia repeated the famous line from the movie, “Anything for Salinas!” Sundown Cinema, put on by the San Francisco Parks Alliance and its partners, continues with monthly screenings at different San Francisco parks through October. To see the schedule, click the link below. People of the Parks is a series of short stories, based on conversations with people we meet in San Francisco parks. Sundown Cinema Lake Merced Trail Improvement Project Pathway Closure We've started working on the northern part of the Lake Merced Trail Improvement Project. To accommodate construction, the trail along Skyline Boulevard is closed through late June. Pedestrians should follow the detour through Harding Park Golf Course, pictured in the map above. This detour is available from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. This project includes reconstructing the asphalt pathway from Harding Park Road to the Sunset Circle parking lot to make it ADA compliant. The lot itself will receive six new ADA parking spaces. Additionally, the natural surface pathway will be repaved with softer soil that is more comfortable for runners and walkers. Existing fitness stations along this same stretch will be replaced with new adult exercise equipment. Questions? Email the project manager at omar.davis at sfgov.org.
