Email from SF Recreation and Parks Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements 9th & Lincoln Gateway Reopening in Golden Gate Park on November 1 Join Rec and Park for the reopening celebration of the 9th and Lincoln Gateway in Golden Gate Park on Friday, November 1 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This improvement project enhances wayfinding signage and pedestrian safety at this popular park entrance. The event will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a reception at the Thomas Church Pavilion Celebration Garden at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the County Fair Building's (1199 9th Avenue) recreation room. For more information about the project, click the link below. 9th & Lincoln Gateway Pysched! Fest at UN Plaza on November 3 Psyched! Fest is back in San Francisco through November 4. Brought to you by Psyched! Radio San Francisco, this festival runs through Halloween week celebrating music, culture, and community. This year, there will be 16 shows across San Francisco, including at UN Plaza on Sunday, November 3 beginning at 1 p.m. The UN Plaza show will feature Y La Bamba, Kiltro, and a DJ set by Lizzy Al Toque. This event will also celebrate the first anniversary of the revitalized UN Plaza, which has become a hub for live music, art, fitness and fun. Fest 2024 Union Square Ice Rink Returns on November 6 The heart of San Francisco will once again transform into a winter wonderland with the return of the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Kaiser Permanente. It returns for its 17th season on Wednesday, November 6 with an opening celebration at 5 p.m. The rink will run through Monday, January 20, 2025. Surrounded by festive lights and the vibrant atmosphere of San Francisco's shopping district, the rink offers a unique outdoor skating experience for all — from families and friends to couples and colleagues. Union Square Ice Rink Afrolicious & Los Calderones at the Golden Gate Bandshell November 9 Come out to the Golden Gate Bandshell (75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive) for SF Live's last show of the year! Join the Boom Boom Room and Illuminate Live for Afrolicious and Los Calderones on Saturday, November 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. The Afrolicious live experience is a joyous and raucous celebration of life. Their sound combines inspiring lyrics, funky basslines, and a powerful horn section while retaining the soul and feel of classic funk, disco, Latin, and Afrobeat melodies. SF Live India Basin Waterfront Park's Weekend Programming Head out to the brand new India Basin Waterfront Park (900 Innes Avenue) this weekend and check out its Food Pavilion with En2Action, which is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. In addition, join Rocking the Boat for its open boat shop session and rowing on Sunday, November 3 from noon to 4 p.m. Hit the water in one of their recreational rowboats or learn carpentry skills at the open shop session and restore a traditional wooden rowboat in the park's new shop building. India Basin Waterfront Park Scaregrove Provides a Spook-Tacular Night at Stern Grove Thank you to everyone who helped make Scaregrove a spook-tacular night at Stern Grove last Friday! Families from across San Francisco crept out to enjoy a fang-tastic evening of free carnival rides, haunted hideaways, creepy-crawly crafts, live entertainment, and a cauldron of creative costumes. A special thanks to our amazing recreation staff and volunteers for organizing this event and sharing this annual Halloween treat with our city. Two Local Artists & Curator Selected for India Basin Waterfront Park Ahead of the opening of India Basin Waterfront Park, the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC), in partnership with Rec and Park, announced its selection of San Francisco-based artists Afatasi the Artist and Conni McKenzie, as well as curator Rhiannon Evans MacFadyen, for the 2024 SFAC Artist in Residence (AIR) program at the India Basin Waterfront Park. Artists Afatasi the Artist (multimedia artist) and Conni McKenzie (performance artist) will spend a year in residence at India Basin Waterfront Park and in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. During the first six months for the AIR program, the artists will conduct research, followed by six months working with curator Rhiannon Evans MacFadyen to develop, produce, and present their new works based on their time at the India Basin Waterfront Park. Artists in Residence Great Famine Memorial Plaza Project Meeting on November 14 Join us for a virtual community meeting on the Great Famine Memorial Plaza Project on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. This project will construct a concrete platform and guardrail to host future artwork, such as informational plaques and a statue memorializing the Great Famine in Ireland (1845-1852). This project is considered Phase 1 of the Memorial Project. At a later date, the San Francisco Irish Famine Memorial Committee will engage with the San Francisco Arts Commission to find an artist to design and construct artwork on the Memorial Plaza. Festival of Altars Birding for Families at the San Francisco Botanical Garden November 9 San Francisco Nature Education (SFNE) is hosting a bird walk field trip in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, November 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at the San Francisco Botanical Garden (1199 9th Avenue). SFNE volunteers will lead these walks for children ages 4 to 12. Youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Meet at the main gate. SFYBL HMPC: Observations at the Water's Edge Open through November 30 Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center (HMPC) for its exhibit "Observations at the Water's Edge" on display at the center (50 Scott Street) through Saturday, November 30. The exhibit features a small sampling of imagery culled from artist Arthur Tress' recent projects including his 30 years spent living in and documenting his life in Cambria and a recent project documenting Mare Island. This diamond-shaped body of work captures the essence of Tress' ongoing obsession with shape, line, and composition. He draws inspiration from beach surroundings and the people he encounters on his photographic journey. Many images in this exhibition were photographed during the making of his film "Water’s Edge”, which will be screened at the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts ballroom on Thursday, November 14 at 6 p.m. For more information, click the link below. Grab tools at the welcome station or bring your own to enjoy hands-on activity stations and help tend the Garden. Heavy rain will cancel programs. Learn about the importance of this natural area and the wildlife it supports. A variety of tasks are available for volunteers of all levels of physical ability. Volunteer Calendar Drop-In Wheelchair Basketball at Glen Park Recreation Center Glen Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street) is hosting a free drop-in wheelchair basketball session every Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. in partnership with BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation. All ages are welcome. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall).
