Email from SF Recreation and Parks Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements South Sunset Clubhouse Groundbreaking on November 14 Join Rec and Park as we break ground on the renovation of South Sunset Clubhouse (40th Avenue and Vicente street) on Thursday, November 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. The event will feature a ceremony followed by a recognition of Assemblymember Phil Ting for his contributions to our park system. Planned improvements to the park include the reconfiguration and renovation of interior spaces in the clubhouse, accessibility improvements, and beautification. South Sunset Clubhouse Annual Holiday Tree Lighting in Golden Gate Park on December 5 Rec and Park is hosting the 95th annual holiday tree lighting in Golden Gate Park on Thursday, December 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. It will feature carnival rides and games, holiday activities, lighted park attractions, live entertainment, food for sale, and the ceremonial lighting of Uncle John's tree—the historic 100-foot tall Monterey cypress outside of McLaren Lodge (501 Stanyan Street). Tree Lighting Ice Rink Back in Union Square through January 20 The heart of San Francisco has transformed into a winter wonderland with the return of the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Kaiser Permanente. It will be open through Monday, January 20, 2025. Surrounded by festive lights and the vibrant atmosphere of San Francisco's shopping district, the rink offers a unique outdoor skating experience for all — from families and friends to couples and colleagues. Union Square Ice Rink Ledyard Alley Transforms into Colorful Pathway Ledyard Alley, an important route adjacent to Silver Terrace Playground (1700 Silver Avenue), recently completed its transformation into a warm and colorful pathway. Located just south of the park, the alley's transformation includes a new mural, raised planting areas, fencing, lighting, entry signage, and drought-tolerant plants that provide year-round blooms for local pollinators. Ledyard Alley Project Rocking the Boat: Spotlight on San Francisco Check out Rocking the Boat's spotlight on San Francisco, which highlights its expansion to our city, as well as its experience so far at India Basin Waterfront Park's shop building. Rocking the Boat SF Girls Volleyball Champs Crowned, Tournament on December 14 Our Girls Play Sports program hosted its fall volleyball league playoffs for its 10U and 14U divisions last weekend. The Upper Noe Aces won the 10U championship while the Richmond Rec team won the 14U championship. Congratulations to these champions and thank you to all of the players, parents, and coaches for an amazing season. The league has grown from 21 players in 2021 to 172 this season. Girls Play Sports India Basin Shoreline Park Community Meeting on November 14 Rec and Park is applying for a United States Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Cleanup Grant to assist in remediating legacy contaminated subsurface soil at India Basin Shoreline Park (Hunters Point Boulevard and Hawes Street). This property is a 7.5-acre park site that will be renovated as a part of the larger India Basin Waterfront Park Project, which opened its first portion at 900 Innes Avenue last month. As part of the grant application process, Rec and Park will hold a public meeting at the Shipwright's Cottage community room in India Basin Waterfront Park (900 Innes Avenue) on Thursday, November 14 beginning at 1 p.m. We will discuss the draft grant proposal and receive comments on it and the proposed use of funds. India Basin Grant Meeting Great Famine Memorial Plaza Project Meeting on November 14 Join us for a virtual community meeting on the Great Famine Memorial Plaza Project on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. This project will construct a concrete platform and guard rail to host future artwork, such as informational plaques and a statue memorializing the Great Famine in Ireland (1845-1852). The location of the project is El Camino Del Mar near Legion of Honor Drive. This project is considered Phase 1 of the Memorial Project. At a later date, the San Francisco Irish Famine Memorial Committee will engage with the San Francisco Arts Commission to find an artist to design and construct artwork on the Memorial Plaza. Great Famine Community Meeting Jackson Playground Community Meeting on November 16 Come out for a community meeting regarding the upcoming Jackson Playground Improvement Project on Saturday, November 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at the park's clubhouse (Mariposa and Arkansas streets). Jackson Playground Community Meeting Glen Canyon Mural Meeting on November 16 Come out for a community meeting to review a proposed new mural at Glen Canyon Park's Elk Street retaining wall on Saturday, November 16 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Organized by Glen Park residents, Renee Berger (leader of the Burnside mural and tiled steps) and Suzanne Ginsburg, it will take place at the Glen Canyon Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street). Design changes are based on new studies and the rules set by the Board of Supervisors to limit expansion of the West Harbor, while still achieving the main project goals: environmental remediation, improving public access to the waterfront, and ensuring the marina is financially sustainable. The screening corresponds with the center's "Observations at the Water's Edge" exhibit, which features a small sampling of imagery culled from artist Arthur Tress' recent projects including his 30 years spent living in and documenting his life in Cambria and a recent project documenting Mare Island. All ages are welcome. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall). It takes place at a different park each Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon (Storytime begins at 10:30 a.m.) with the next at Hilltop Park (Newcomb Avenue and Whitney Young Circle) on November 19. Video of the Week Solar Arch Unveiled on JFK Promenade Our Video of the Week comes from ABC7 and highlights the unveiling of the Solar Arch by Illuminate last weekend at the Yellow Dot on the JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park (JFK Drive and Conservatory Drive East). In conjunction with the unveiling, the Bay Area Ridge Trail has been rerouted to run directly through this new landmark, merging art with nature on the trail.
