Bring Your Dog on Thanksgiving Day!
Thanksgiving Day is a special day to spend with family and friends – and of course, family includes your best friend – your dog! For the first time, SF Zoo is opening its doors for you to bring your dog to the Zoo – and let them get a whiff of some very interesting new smells!
Dog Day at SF Zoo will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28. In order to ensure the safety of our animals and guests, we are limiting the number of dogs that can be in the Zoo at any time. Any guest wishing to bring their canine companion must call us in advance to reserve a time slot which is available at three intervals – 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To reserve a time, please call 415-753-7080 prior to your visit. Space is limited. Thank you for understanding.
In addition, we require one dog per person, and the dog must be on a leash at all times. Dogs will also only be allowed in areas that have physical barriers and not, for example, in the Family Farm, and must stay in public areas at all times.
Even without a dog, come burn off some energy by visiting the Zoo before indulging in your Thanksgiving feast! We are open on Thanksgiving Day…and every day! The Zoo has become a tradition for some to visit, take a quality stroll, play on the playground, say hello to your favorite animals, and even get time in to see the penguins fed their holiday feast (hint: they will get herring!).
Plus, be sure to take advantage of our November rides BOGO where you can buy-one, get-one for free, good for our VR experience with the new film Elf Power and rides on the Dentzel Carousel.
International Jaguar Day
https://www.internationaljaguarday.org/
The spots you see on a jaguar are known as rosettes, which are black spots with an outer ring; with a few black spots inside them. The spots help them camouflage within their rainforest environment, as prey are less likely to “spot” them. Jaguars are the third-largest cat in the world and the largest wild cat in Central and South America. International Jaguar Day is celebrated each year on November 29, to create awareness of the need for conservation to this species whose numbers continue to decline in the wild. Another cool fact about jaguars is that they love to swim and are excellent climbers!

Little Puffer Update
We know you’ve been anxiously awaiting the return of our miniature steam train. We are happy to report that we have nearly completed our track renovations, which includes accommodations for a new locomotive. Little Puffer was built at the turn of the last century, arrived at SF Zoo in 1925 and had undergone a major restoration in 1998. Since then, she’s been plugging along – we like to say that she’s the “little engine that could!”
We’ll have more news soon about the new locomotive that we affectionately call “Cobby,” after our late, beloved male chimpanzee, which we intend to use periodically. At this time, we do not have an exact “re-opening” date, but rest assured, we’re working to make it happen soon! Thank you for your patience and understanding. (Photo by Marianne Hale)
Donate to Help Conservation & Wellness Programs
https://www.sfzoo.org/conservation-donation-fund/
We have had extraordinary interest by individuals seeking to donate for a particular need and we thank you for your generosity! We have since earmarked a dedicated fund to support requests made by our animal, veterinary and conservation departments seeking funding to help them acquire items that would benefit their programs.
Over the years, we have had great success through our Fund in Need program as part of our ZooFest fundraising gala event each year, including most recently, funding new x-ray components to upgrade our x-ray machine.
Donations made to the Conservation Donation Fund will help purchase a variety of “wish list” items throughout the year, rather than at a specific time period. To learn more, visit Conservation Donation Fund (https://www.sfzoo.org/conservation-donation-fund/) or email development at sfzoo.org (mailto:development at sfzoo.org) .
