Join us on Saturday, October 12 as we host another of our popular Member series, “Drinks, Bites & Zoo Insights.” As a free exclusive member event, this month, meet Eva Mac, our nutrition kitchen manager, who will present “Nutrition Plans for our Animal Residents: How We Feed 6,000 Animals Each Day.” Eva will discuss how every individual animal is fed from a scientific, nutritional and dietary standpoint, from the smallest invertebrate to the largest mammal.
The event will take place at the Osher Great Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beverages and happy hour drinks while you meet members of Zoo team members. All ages are welcome to this Members-only event, with proof of membership required upon entry. To RSVP, email us at membership at sfzoo.org.

Conservation Presentation Recap
This week, we were honored to have as a guest speaker, Dr. Dominic Maringa Ikuathu, Ph.D and Head of Conservation and Wildlife for the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Dr. Ikuathu’s talk about the challenging work of his dedicated conservationists to save critically endangered black and white rhinoceroses over several decades has contributed greatly to keeping these, and many other African species, alive and thriving, thanks to the establishment of their 62,000 acre wildlife sanctuary located in northern Kenya.

Dr. Ikuathu, who has 13+ years of experience in natural resource conservation and community development, provided an overview of Lewa’s community conservation model and wildlife populations, with a focus on human wildlife conflict mitigation efforts. He shared with guests stories of conflict, his experiences educating communities about the importance of saving wildlife and the wonders of wildlife. We thank Dr. Ikuathu for coming to San Francisco and sharing the work of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy! (Photo courtesy of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy)

L Taraval Returns!
Access to SF Zoo just got easier with the return this past weekend of the L Taraval Muni line, which had been closed while undergoing enhancement work over the past five years. During this closure, the Muni buses continued to operate, but the historical transportation line was on hold as many new improvements were made, including all new tracks, new boarding islands with accessible stops, improved safety for pedestrians, and major upgrades of infrastructure. What makes the L line so convenient is the route runs from the Embarcadero to SF Zoo, and the L Taraval is a vital connection for those traveling from West Portal and the Sunset District. Now traveling to SF Zoo will be a much improved and exemplary experience!

Choose Sustainable Palm Oil Candy Products This Halloween Season

Your candy choices can make a big difference for wild orangutans, and we are happy to share this year’s guide to Halloween candy made from sustainable palm oil, developed each year by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The wild populations of critically endangered species like Bornean and Sumatran orangutans, and other species that live in tropical rainforests, are declining rapidly due to habitat loss and deforestation caused by the destruction of their homes for palm oil, used in many products.
Sustainable palm oil is produced with the lowest possible environmental impact, minimizing impact to wildlife and local communities. Check out Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s web page (https://www.cmzoo.org/conservation/orangutans-palm-oil/) and also check out the labels – products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) trademark shows it contains a minimum of 95% certified sustainable palm oil. Choose wisely and save wildlife!
