Scaregrove Kat Anderson Reappointed to Recreation & Park Commission Congratulations to Kat Anderson on her reappointment to the Recreation and Park Commission for a third term. First appointed by Mayor Ed Lee in 2016, Anderson has shown exceptional dedication and leadership throughout her tenure. In October 2021, she was elected vice president of the commission, and in September 2023, she ascended to the role of president, becoming the seventh woman to lead this commission in its nearly 100-year history. Anderson has championed numerous initiatives during her time on the commission, including the permanent car-free status of JFK Drive and John F. Shelley Road, the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond, the acquisition of Mission Bay Parks and 240 Sixth Street, the creation of the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, and more. We look forward to her continued leadership in ensuring that San Francisco's parks remain among the best in the nation! San Francisco Bay Sox Participate in Statue Unveiling by Oracle Park Members of the San Francisco Bay Sox Girls Baseball program were invited to the dedication of Dr. Maya Angelou Lane and Toni Stone Crossing near Oracle Park. The event also featured the unveiling of a statue of Toni Stone, who was the first woman to play professional baseball in the Negro Leagues, breaking barriers by joining the Indianapolis Clowns in 1953. She also lived in San Francisco's Fillmore District and played for the San Francisco Sea Lions. Known for her skill as a second baseman, she paved the way for future generations of women in sports while overcoming racial and gender discrimination. The statue was created by local artist Dana King, who described the sculpture as Toni standing on deck looking around with a smirk on her face to let the crowd know that she was not going to back down. We're grateful for this opportunity to have our own Bay Sox pioneers participate in this historic event! Learn more about the Bay Sox and how to participate in the program at the link below. SF Bay Sox Whale’s Tail Now Powered by Renewable Energy with Flower Turbines We’re excited to announce the installation of a Flower Turbine Eco Hub at the Whale’s Tail watering hole in Golden Gate Park! This project was made possible through the Yes San Francisco grant program, which provided small grants to innovative solutions, including Flower Turbines, to deploy their products in the city. The unit uses a combination of wind and solar energy to generate clean power for lighting, refrigeration, and more, showcasing sustainable energy technology in action. Once the Whale Tail closes for the season, the Eco Hub will move to another NonPlusUltra location. This pilot project is an example of how we’re integrating renewable energy into our facilities while supporting San Francisco’s green initiatives. 17 Rec & Park Employees Complete NCRC's Conflict Resolution Program We today celebrated 17 Rec and Park employees within the department's Neighborhood Enrichment Services team for completing the Culture, Communication, and Conflict Certificate Program for Community Leaders by National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC). The NCRC empowers participants with essential conflict resolution skills for the workplace, community, and beyond. Our staff completed four intensive workshops focused on communication strategies and tools for handling difficult situations to earn their certificates. We’re proud of our graduates and excited for the positive impact they’ll bring to our parks and city! Coyote Outreach Ambassadors Team Up with Presidio Trust & UC Davis Last weekend, our Coyote Outreach Ambassadors teamed up with Presidio Trust Wildlife Ecologist Phoebe Parker-Shames and UC Davis PhD Candidate Tali Caspi to remind park goers that coyotes have been active around the Presidio, including Mountain Lake Park and Presidio Wall. Note that the Mountain Lake Dog Play Area remains closed for pup safety. Tips from this team: Please keep dogs on leash and keep cats and other pets indoors. Observe trail closure and other signage alerting the public that coyotes are present or may be denning in the area. Never, ever feed a coyote or other wildlife. Learn more about living with urban wildlife at the link below.
