Dance with Hermes, the hula-hooping Greek messenger god; meditate with Ox Head/Horse Face, guardian of the Chinese underworld; and rock out with the Valkyries, winged goddesses of victory. SF Live Opening of India Basin Waterfront Park at 900 Innes on October 19 The partners of the India Basin Waterfront Park project—including the Trust for Public Land, San Francisco Parks Alliance, A. Philip Randolph Institute, San Francisco Recreation and Parks, and the Bayview-Hunters Point community, as well as the San Francisco Foundation—invite you to the opening of India Basin Waterfront Park at 900 Innes Avenue on Saturday, October 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opening remarks will begin at 11:30 a.m. Join us for a vibrant celebration of the new park and the Bayview-Hunters Point community featuring free food through the park's new food pavilion managed by En2Action; row boats for visitors to take out on the water with Rocking the Boat; live performances hosted by the Ruth Williams Opera House, an art activity with the park's new Artist in Residence, resources connecting people to programs in the project's Equitable Development Plan, and more. As part of the festivities, the adjacent India Basin Shoreline Park (Hunters Point Boulevard and Hawes Street) will host Fall Fest, an annual event with a local vendor market, DJ, pumpkin patch, food, art activities, a health zone, and recreational fun for all. India Basin Waterfront Park Scaregrove Brings Spooky Fun to Stern Grove on October 25 Scaregrove, Rec and Park's Halloween bash, brings spooky fun to Stern Grove (19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard) on Friday, October 25 from 3 to 9 p.m. It will have free admission and fun for the entire family! Enjoy carnival rides and games, haunted places, arts and crafts, food for sale, live entertainment and more. Free bike parking will be provided. Scaregrove Fall Baseball & Softball Academy Underway for Second Year The Giants Community Fund, in partnership with Rec and Park, kicked off our second fall Baseball and Softball Academy last month. This free eight-week program is based at the Crocker Amazon baseball fields and is designed for middle and high school players with prior experience. This fall, we have more than 330 players on 20 teams. Teams have Saturday practices and games, as well as guest speakers from within the Giants organization and Major League Baseball who impart their wisdom about the business and game of baseball. We look forward to watching these players improve as they prepare for their 2025 seasons! OMI Community Service Day Birding for Families at Chain of Lakes in Golden Gate Park on October 12 San Francisco Nature Education (SFNE) is hosting a bird walk field trip in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Chain of Lakes (50 Blue Heron Lake Drive). SFNE volunteers will lead these walks for children ages 4 to 12. Youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Meet at the Middle Lake parking lot (371 Chain of Lakes Drive). Birding for Families Closing Weekend of The Whale's Tail on October 12 & 13 Come out for the closing weekend of The Whale’s Tail, Golden Gate Park's seasonal watering hole from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13. Located at the 14th Avenue East Meadow just west of the Rose Garden on the JFK Promenade, it will feature live music, as well as food trucks, street art and games The seasonal destination is a collaboration between Rec and Park, Non Plus Ultra, Illuminate, and SF Live. The Whale's Tail HMPC: Observations at the Water's Edge Opening on October 12 Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center (HMPC) for the opening of "Observations at the Water's Edge" on Saturday, October 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the center (50 Scott Street). The exhibit features a small sampling of imagery culled from artist Arthur Tress' recent projects including his 30 years spent living in and documenting his life in Cambria and a recent project documenting Mare Island. This diamond-shaped body of work captures the essence of Tress' ongoing obsession with shape, line, and composition. He draws inspiration from beach surroundings and the people he encounters on his photographic journey. Many images in this exhibition were photographed during the making of his film "Water’s Edge”, which will be screened at the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts ballroom on Thursday, November 14 at 6 p.m. For more information, click the link below. Explore more than 130 artists' studios, enjoy live music, food, kids’ activities, and a silent art auction. Shipyard Artist Open Studios Programming and Regular Series Jose Coronado Futsal League Registration Now Open Registration for the 26th season of the Jose Coronado Indoor Soccer (Futsal) League is now open. This historic 5-on-5 league returns for youth ages 5 to 18 with recreational, intermediate and advanced teams available. All games are on Sundays with the season beginning on January 12. Civic Center Plazas Bean Sprouts Family Days Back at the San Francisco Botanical Garden Join the San Francisco Botanical Garden (1199 9th Avenue) for Bean Sprouts Family Days, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the first Saturday of the month from noon to 4 p.m. Dig, water, pick, and explore in the Botanical Garden’s space for kids. Grab tools at the welcome station or bring your own to enjoy hands-on activity stations and help tend the Garden. Heavy rain will cancel programs. Adaptive Bike Program in Golden Gate Park on Saturdays Check out San Francisco's free Adaptive Bike Program in Golden Gate Park on Saturdays through October 26. In partnership with the BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, we're providing hand cycles, foot trikes and tandem bikes for use on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These adaptive cycles will be available at the Music Concourse behind the Bandshell (75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive), next to the accessible parking lot. Drop-In Wheelchair Basketball at Glen Park Recreation Center Glen Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street) is hosting a free drop-in wheelchair basketball session every Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. in partnership with BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation. All ages are welcome. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall). Natural Resource Division Volunteer Days on October 12 & 16 Join Rec and Parks' Natural Resource Division for upcoming volunteer days including on Saturday, October 12 at the Oak Woodlands in Golden Gate Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon and Wednesday, October 16 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Davidson. Learn about the importance of this natural area and the wildlife it supports. A variety of tasks are available for volunteers of all levels of physical ability. Live Music Swing into Stories in San Francisco Parks The San Francisco Public Library's (SFPL) YouthMobile is coming to parks around the city. Movement and play are essential building blocks in fostering literacy and a love of reading and the SFPL is bringing stories and song to San Francisco's parks through its Swing into Stories program. It takes place at a different park each Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon (Storytime begins at 10:30 a.m.) with the next at Hilltop Park (Newcomb Avenue and Whitney Young Circle) on October 15.
