International Sloth Day
International Sloth Day takes place on Saturday, October 19, which recognizes sloths as an important umbrella species and a key indicator of the health and balance of their ecosystem, according to the Sloth Conservation Foundation, an organization dedicated to saving sloths in the wild through research and conservation initiatives. Known as the “slowest moving mammals on the planet,” they excel at conserving energy!

We are home to two Southern two-toed sloths, a species native to Central and South American lowland and mountain tropical forests. They are primarily nocturnal and solitary animals, living high in the rainforest canopies. Because they spend most of their time hanging up in the trees, their fur grows in the opposite direction of other mammals with special grooves in it which host algae. Though considered a species of least concern by the IUCN, they are extremely vulnerable to deforestation and the illegal wildlife trade.

San Francisco Resident Free Day
To celebrate International Snow Leopard Day, we are offering San Francisco residents free admission on Wednesday, October 23rd. Come visit our male snow leopard, “Jimmy G.” at the Expedition: Snow Leopard habitat, where you can see him high up on the rocky ridges or close-up through the viewing windows. International Snow Leopard Day was created in 2014 to raise awareness of the plight of snow leopards and the need to protect them in the wild. Snow leopards are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, human wildlife conflict and the illegal wildlife trade, and poaching for their fur. As a keystone species in their native mountain ranges of Central Asia, they play a key role in their ecosystem.

San Francisco residents receive free admission with a valid photo I.D.
New Chinese Bilingual Zoo Camp
The Zoo continues its efforts to expand into our community and connect more individuals with the wonders of nature by offering a Chinese Bilingual Zoo Camp program on Saturdays in November. The new Fall Adventures Bilingual Zoo Camp is available for students ages 6 & 7 (1st and 2nd grade levels) offered in Cantonese and English on three consecutive Saturdays, November 9, 16 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This special bilingual camp is geared to English learners that speak Chinese.

The cost for each participant is $300, though scholarships are being offered to families with demonstrated need. Campers engage in activities focused on conservation, Fall animal exploration, and hands-on experiments. They will learn about local ecosystems and the importance of seasonal wildlife behaviors. The kids will participate in science-based challenges that illustrate the importance of seasonal wildlife behaviors and those that illustrate specific adaptations, such as the thickness of fur and the different types of beaks and bills among different species. Campers will also create art related to changes that occur in nature during the Fall.

For more information, to sign up or to qualify for a program scholarship, interested individuals can email zoocamp at sfzoo.org.
