World Lemur Day

On this World Lemur Day, we are celebrating lemurs! Did you know that lemurs are the world’s oldest living primate that naturally only live on the island of Madagascar? Lemurs are comprised of an estimated 112 species, all endangered and threatened with extinction.
Known as the “creators of the forests” because of their key role as seed dispersers, lemurs play a significant role within their ecosystem, helping forests to grow. At the Zoo, the multi-species Lipman Family Lemur Forest gives guests an eye-level view of how lemurs live, high in the trees, and the dynamics of how different lemur species interact with one another. They are also active and curious, can often be seen in a sun-worshipping pose on a particularly sunny day, and keen on snacking on their favorite foods, like honeysuckle and coprosma.

This Friday, October 25th, come see our lemurs and support conservation of lemurs! Animal care staff will have special lemur crafts and lemur facts set up at Entry Village.
Guess the Weight of the Giant Pumpkin!
Do you think you can “eyeball” the weight of a giant pumpkin by just looking at it? Come to the Zoo now through October 31st for a chance to see our ginormous squash in person, located in Entry Village, and guess the weight by submitting your guess on our website (https://www.sfzoo.org/weigh-pumpkin-contest/) ! We’ll even give you a hint – the pumpkin weighs about the same as an ostrich!

We’ll award the winning entry an ostrich-themed prize pack. If there are duplicate winning entries, we will pick a final winner randomly from these entries.

A big thank you to Clancy’s Pumpkins for their generous donation of the giant pumpkin! Visit Clancy’s at the corner of Sloat and Skyline Blvds. for all your pumpkin needs! Zoo Members receive 10% off their purchase with their Membership card.

Vote for the Planet
During this year’s election, an important state ballot measure to take note of is Proposition 4, which authorizes funding for climate change-related issues. In particular, a Yes vote would allow the state to borrow $10 billion to fund the protection of natural resources, for safe drinking water and clean air, and would proactively address the worst impacts of wildfires including smoke, drought and pollution, thus responding to the causes and effects of climate change.

According to Yes on 4 (https://yesonprop4ca.com/) , this proposition tackles most of our urgent climate needs today, such as the extreme summer heat and other major threats from a changing climate. Proposition 4 protects the sources of our clean air and water, and preserves California’s iconic forests, mountains, rivers and coast.

Among the supporters of Proposition 4 are Clean Water Action, CAL FIRE Firefighters, National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, California Council of Land Trusts, the California State Parks Foundation and many other notable supporters (https://yesonprop4ca.com/endorsements/) .

Prosimian Plunge Date Change
Please be advised that the original date of the Prosimian Plunge fundraising event has changed from Friday, October 25th to Saturday, November 2nd. Sorry for the late notification.

This fundraising event is part of World Lemur Day as members of the American Association of Zookeepers San Francisco (AAZKSF) will be hosting a special on-site fundraising event to raise funds for the Lemur Conservation Network. The event is not just any event! During Prosimian Plunge, you can donate for a chance to dunk one of our animal curators or keepers in a dunk tank!

So, get your throwing arm ready, because you’ve got to hit the target in order to dunk our brave animal care staff! The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Entry Village.

Lemur Conservation Network (LCN) believes that lemurs, primates found only in Madagascar and among the world’s most endangered mammals, can be saved from extinction if we all work together. LCN unites over 60 conservation organizations and connects them with people around the world, through communications, education, and empowerment – supporting Malagasy organizations and conservationists.

Come to the Zoo to support lemurs!
