Honor Your Loved Ones & Pets

In honor of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday that celebrates loved ones who have passed away, we have erected an ofrenda in the Leaping Lemur Café that is present now through November 2. An ofrenda is an elaborate altar that is comprised of many meanings to honor deceased loved ones, from using specific flowers to guide the dead to the altar to cut-out paper art, favorite foods and personal objects. The ofrenda is a way to honor and remember loved one’s lives.

On Friday and Saturday, November 1 & 2 from 12 noon to 2 p.m., we invite you to join us in the Lemur Café to honor your loved ones. Bring photos of family or pets that have passed on and you can design a frame to add to the ofrenda altar. We can even print out the photos for you if you just have a digital image.

Daylight Savings Time = Winter Zoo Hours

Please make note that on Sunday, November 3rd, we will be adjusting our opening and closing times to coincide with Daylight Savings Time. Starting Sunday, the Zoo will open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m., with the last guest entry at 4 p.m. These hours will be in effect through the end of Daylight Savings Time on March 9, 2025.

Do you wonder how Daylight Savings Time affects our animals? Wild animals rely on an “internal clock” along with sunrises and sunsets. Animals more active in the daytime may even adjust their schedules to be more active at night to avoid humans. In a zoo environment, our animals will sense a change, mainly due to differences in human activities.
Arrival of Critically Endangered Bongos
We are excited to announce the arrival last week of a pair of female Eastern bongos, also known as mountain bongos. These rare antelopes are just over a year old and will eventually join our male after an acclimation period. Wild eastern bongos are found in only a few isolated mountain areas of Kenya and are classified by the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group as critically endangered and were placed here as part of AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation.

Bongos are a forest antelope and the largest and heaviest of two subspecies of bongos (the other being the western or lowland bongo). Forest antelopes hold their head lower and their backs are rounded, allowing them to navigate through dense underbrush. Both males and females have distinctive (and impressive), spiraling horns. Bongos have a reddish-brown coat with black-and-white markings. This subspecies is critically endangered due to loss of habitat and poaching with fewer than 80 individuals left in the wild. Conservation is underway to establish breeding and rewilding of bongos through Kenya-based conservation organizations.

Chinese Bilingual Zoo Camp Connects Community to Nature

Chinese Bilingual Zoo Camp is a new program that connects our community with nature through hands-on activities and exploration. The day camp serves students ages 6 & 7 (1^st and 2^nd grade levels) and is offered in Cantonese and English, primarily English learners that speak Chinese.

Through this program, participants will engage in activities focused on conservation, Fall animal exploration, and hands-on experiments, plus local ecosystems and the importance of seasonal wildlife behaviors. These science-based challenges illustrate the importance of seasonal wildlife behaviors and those that illustrate specific adaptations, such as the thickness of fur and the different types of beaks and bills among different species. Campers will also create art related to changes that occur in nature during the Fall.

For more information and to be added to a wait list for this November series, interested individuals can email zoocamp at sfzoo.org (mailto:zoocamp at sfzoo.org) .

Election Day is Free Day for SF Residents
Election Day is almost here! After fulfilling your civic duty at your local polling places, come take advantage of our monthly resident Free Day on Tuesday, November 5th. Since we are now in Daylight Savings Time mode, please be advised that our hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As for Election Day, we encourage you to thoroughly read and understand the local and state ballot measures and of course, candidates for the various offices. One such measure is Proposition 4, which authorizes funding for climate change-related issues, funding protection of natural resources and proactively addresses the impacts of wildfires, drought and pollution. A Yes vote authorizes funding to help protect our greatest assets.
