Giant Hay Maze Here We Come!
Get ready for the biggest hay structure in San Francisco with a special sneak peek of the Happy Hollow Hay Maze starting Saturday, September 7th! Kids of all ages will enjoy navigating through the maze made up of over 600 bales of bundled straw over an expanse of 5,000 square feet and which incorporates play areas within the design. The hay maze is open every day through Halloween and is free with paid admission or membership. And don’t forget “play and adventure” are always available at SF Zoo’s unique Friend Family Playground in the Youth Exploration Zone!

Western Pond Turtles in New Habitat
We recently relocated our four male Western pond turtles from the Conservation Corridor to the outdoor habitat at the west side of Penguin Island and the group is acclimating well, even seen basking in the sun! Western pond turtles are California’s only native freshwater turtle species and are found from Washington State to Baja California.

SF Zoo participates in the Association of Zoo & Aquarium’s SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program to reintroduce western pond turtles back into the wild by working with local conservation groups. Since 2008, our conservation team has released 447 western pond turtles to areas such as San Francisco’s Mountain Lake and locations in Marin, and working with our veterinary staff, have rehabilitated injured wild turtles from Yosemite National Park and East Bay Regional Parks. Last year, in conjunction with partners, our teams worked to assess the health of local populations of western pond turtles.

They are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List and are threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation and competition with invasive species.

Iguana Awareness Day
Iguana wish you a Happy National Iguana Awareness Day! Each year, on September 8th, we celebrate these large herbivorous lizards that are native to Mexico, South and Central America, and the Caribbean; they are also non-native reptiles introduced throughout the world, including Florida. According to the IUCN, there are 46 species of iguanas, and are among the world’s most endangered animals due to severe habitat degradation and invasive species. Iguanas are important seed dispersers for many native plants, playing a vital role in the health of their ecosystems.
