Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Mayor London Breed Honors SF Bay Sox Girls Baseball Program Today, Mayor London Breed honored the San Francisco Bay Sox, a pioneering all-girls baseball program, for its accomplishments at the Baseball for All Nationals, while also declaring Thursday, September 12, 2024 to be Bay Sox Day in San Francisco. This year at Nationals, our 16U team won its second national championship after winning in the 14U division last year. They started 3-1 in the round-robin portion of the tournament, before making it to the championship game where they beat the Toronto Cardinals 10-9 in a nail biter. The 14U team began the tournament with three wins in its round-robin bracket, closing with a 4-2 record, good for fourth place out of 16 teams in its division. The 12U team was one of the youngest teams in their division, finishing with a 1-4 record, but gaining valuable experience as they look to compete in this tournament for years to come. We look forward to both of these teams bringing home the championship trophy next year! Congratulations to all of the players, as well as to all of the coaches and volunteers that make this program possible. The Bay Sox Girls Baseball program has grown to provide year-round developmental activities, youth baseball teams, and higher-level travel teams for girls ages 6 to 18. Since its inception in 2015, it has expanded from one team of 12 girls to serving more than 120 girls annually through its programming. Learn more about the Bay Sox and how to get involved at the link below. Comedy Day September 11 Anniversary: Remembering our Local Heroes Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and we honor two local heroes who showed incredible bravery. Betty Ann Ong, a San Francisco native and flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11, was the first to alert authorities about the hijacking. She stayed on the phone for 23 minutes, providing crucial information that led to the closure of U.S. airspace for the first time in history. The Chinese Recreation Center, where she played as a child, was renamed in her honor in 2011. Learn more about her life and legacy at this link. Mark Bingham, a Bay Area native and UC Berkeley rugby player, was aboard United Airlines Flight 93. He joined fellow passengers in storming the cockpit, forcing the hijackers to crash the plane in Pennsylvania, averting an attack on Washington, D.C. Bingham was posthumously awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, and the gymnasium at Eureka Valley Recreation Center was named after him in 2002. Learn more about his life and legacy from his Alma Mater at this link. San Francisco Children & Nature Strategic Plan In 2017, the San Francisco Children and Nature (SFCN) collaborative was formed to address disparities in nature access across socioeconomic and racial lines. Its aim is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to play, learn, and grow outdoors. Since then, more than 40 city agencies and nonprofit organizations have joined forces to equitably expand opportunities for nature connection in early education, schools, and neighborhoods, advocating for places, programs, and policies that support their collective vision. The collaborative is thrilled to share its 2024-2029 Strategic Plan representing a renewed commitment to building a city-wide movement that enhances access to nature spaces and high-quality nature experiences, centering on the well-being and health outcomes of San Francisco’s children and youth.
