** Back to School at the
Mission Science Workshops!
------------------------------------------------------------
We are welcoming another school year here at Mission Science Workshop, sharing hands-on science and engineering across all three of our workshop spaces, as well as our mobile programs!
In just a few short weeks, we've already had so many wonderful experiences with students, teachers, and classrooms from all across San Francisco's public schools and beyond.
We have also started hosting After School STEM programs, Tinker Tuesdays and Open Community Saturdays at our three workshops!
** Whale Week at
Gordon Lau Elementary School
------------------------------------------------------------
In September, our staff visited Gordon Lau Elementary School for an entire week with our "Whale on Wheels" program -- where we bring Gracie, our full gray whale skeleton. Students compared the whale skeleton to a human skeleton -- viewing all of the incredible similarities and even holding whale rib or jaw bones next to human ones. It was a hands-on way of learning about comparative anatomy and evolution. Students also learned about marine food systems and tips for ocean conservation efforts!
Every classroom at Gordon Lau had the opportunity to participate in the whale program individually. This gave us ample time to answer all of students' curious questions, and tailor each program to the classroom science learning and needs.

** Fun STEM Field Trips
------------------------------------------------------------
Students from Cesar Chavez, MEC, Moscone, Gordon Lau, Malcom X, Charles Drew, Harvey Milk, BVHM, Flynn, Monroe, Mission High, Bret Harte and more amazing schools have already visited our three workshops during these last few weeks for exciting grade-level experiments and activities aligned with NGSS Science Standards.
Mission High Students created their own mushroom terrariums, learned about agricultural science and tinkered with circuits. Third graders from Flynn, Harvey Milk and Monroe made balancing toys, Junipero Serra Fourth graders made wind turbines while learning about energy conversions, Dolores Huerta fifth grader students had fun learning about different types of chemical reactions and Charles Drew students learned about inheritance and traits while extracting DNA from different fruits.
** SFUSD Middle School Library Program
------------------------------------------------------------
We are thrilled to be partening with SFUSD Librarians across six different Middle Schools this school year to bring science and engineering fun to their libraries during lunch! Some activities will include making pendants with DNA, engraving our own LED lamps or making a personal fan or motorized car.
** Intern Highlight
------------------------------------------------------------
Majid is one of our stellar paid high school interns. He is a senior at Balboa High School and in his third year with us. He is one of our senior interns and mentor to our newer interns and an integral part of our team. He has built incredible terrariums with native plants and critters, hydroponic plant tanks, so many cool exhibits like the guess the skull game and much more.
** Open Community Days
------------------------------------------------------------
Please stop by at any- or all! of our community days for free science and engineering fun for the whole family where you can interact with our exhibits, pet our live animals, build anything from your imagination using our tools and materials, crack open a 50 million year old fossil or touch real whale or ostrich bones among many other things!
We hope you all had a wonderful begining of the school year. We are grateful to be part of such a vibrant and resourceful community. Please contact us at outreach at missionscienceworkshop.org for any questions or inquiries.
See you at the workshops!
