Special Ceremony on Save the Koala Day
Please join us on Friday, September 27 at 2 p.m. as we welcome Mr. Chris Ketter, Australian Consul General San Francisco as part of a special Save the Koala Day ceremony. On behalf of the San Francisco Zoological Society, our CEO & Executive Director, Tanya Peterson will be announcing a donation of $14,000 to benefit the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital which has been rescuing, rehabilitating and release wild koalas for 50 years. According to Mr. Ketter, this donation will help with bushfires and wildfire damage to koala habitats in Australia. The ceremony will take place at Koala Crossing and is open to visitors.
Additionally, we are offering free admission to San Francisco residents and Australian citizens. SF Residents must show a valid I.D. showing their residency or a utilities statement with street address. Citizens with an Australian passport will receive free access all weekend long.
SF Zoo is one of just 11 zoos in the U.S. with koalas, now listed as an endangered species in many regions of Australia due to habitat loss, disease, and climate change, including frequent bushfires. Some ways you can help support koala conservation is by donating to organizations such as the Australian Koala Foundation (https://www.savethekoala.com/) and Koala Conservation Australia (https://koalahospital.org.au/) . Meet our Newest Wallaroo!
You may have seen the newest member of the two-acre Australian WalkAbout. “Inala” is a two-and-a-half year old male common wallaroo, who was born at the Oakland Zoo. Inala joins the resident wallaroos, two males and a female that may be a potential breeding opportunity as female “Dundee” and Inala have a breeding recommendation. Inala is darker in color and brown as an indication that he is an intact male (the other males are gray in color). Common wallaroos are stable in the wild with a fairly large population and are listed as an species of least concern according to the IUCN Red List.

Wildlife Conservation Lecture
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Dominic Maringa Ikuathu, Ph.D and Head of Conservation and Wildlife for the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Dr. Marina will be giving an enlightening presentation open to Members at the Zoo’s Osher Great Hall on Tuesday, October 1 at 2 p.m.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (https://www.lewa.org/) is a wildlife sanctuary located on over 62,000 acres in northern Kenya and has one of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya, where 12% of the country’s black and white rhinos and the world’s single largest population of Grevy’s zebra live. Much of their work is focused on community development and education programs to contribute to the survival of many iconic African species through long-term solutions.
Dr. Maringa has 13+ years of experience in natural resource conservation and community development. Coins can Kill
A friendly reminder to please not toss coins of any kind into the pool that is home to our colony of Magellanic penguins. Penguins are attracted to shiny objects and will swallow the coins, leading to severe stomach illness, lethargy, organ failure and can even be fatal.
Our veterinary staff recently performed coin removal procedures on two of our penguins, “Pip” and “Tootsie.” For Tootsie, this is the fifth time she has had to have coins removed from her gastrointestinal tract and we are lucky that staff recognized a difference in her behavior. By inserting a camera into her GI tract, they were able to find and remove three coins.
It is especially dangerous when pennies are tossed into the water. Pennies are copper plated zinc and silver coins are copper plated nickel. When these coins enter the GI tract, the metal is broken down by the acid in the stomach and enters the bloodstream. Penguins explore their environment using their beaks and the shiny coins resemble fish scales. As they are very curious, they will see coins as food items.
Please help us to refrain from throwing any object, especially coins, into the Penguin Island pool where our penguins live. We appreciate your attention and understanding.
