Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements City Leaders Celebrate New Restaurant Opening at Civic Center Plaza Mayor London Breed last week joined City leaders and workers from the Civic Center area to celebrate the opening of beloved San Francisco eatery Limoncello’s new outpost in the Civic Center Plaza café kiosk. This opening of the eatery builds on the City’s momentum to enliven the area, which was kickstarted last fall with the creation of a popular skatepark and full roster of fitness classes and concerts in neighboring UN Plaza. The Italian deli, grocery, and café - a neighborhood favorite in Pacific Heights and the Mission District - serves pizza, sandwiches, and gelato in its third location. With a backdrop of City Hall and an outdoor gathering space next to the Helen Diller Playgrounds, Limoncello is the latest addition to the Civic Center area’s revitalization. The opening coincided with a larger day of celebration in the Civic Center area with the unveiling of the Dr. Maya Angelou Monument. This set the stage for a busy weekend in Civic Center, which featured Portugal. The Man playing Civic Center Plaza; "Back to the Plaza" skateboarding competition and the Heart of the City Farmers Market at UN Plaza; the SF Vintage Market at Fulton Plaza; and the More than 2 Blocks of Art art walk on Market Street. Limoncello is located at 52 Grove Street in the Civic Center Plaza café kiosk. The kiosk opened in October 2018; part of a Civic Center renovation funded by a $13 million gift from the Helen Diller Family Foundation. Limoncello is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, click the link below. New Restaurant at Civic Center Plaza Sunday Swim! Pool Pilot Program Set To Launch On September 29 For the first time since before the pandemic, City residents will be able to dive into public swimming seven days a week, thanks to a pilot program to be launched by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department on Sunday, September 29. This pilot program marks a significant milestone in Rec and Park’s efforts to maximize resources and expand public access without raising prices. To achieve seven day a week swimming in the public pool system, Rec and Park will shift Garfield and Rossi pool schedules to Sunday-Thursday. All other pools will remain on a Tuesday-Saturday schedule, ensuring San Franciscans can choose from a variety of swimming options every day of the week. The two pools were selected for the Sunday pilot due to their strategic locations on opposite sides of the city and their large shallow areas, which cater to both kids and adults. Both pools are also well-served by public transportation and are located within 2-3 miles of additional neighborhood pools. The program's introduction follows a robust community engagement process, including a survey distributed to over 120,000 people over five weeks, and posted on social media and at pools. Rec and Park received 1,700 responses. The feedback was overwhelmingly in favor of increasing weekend swim time, particularly for families. For more information, click the link below. HSB FAQ Surgeon General: Parental Stress Significant Public Health Issue The Surgeon General recently issued an advisory highlighting parental stress as a public health concern. One of the driving issues is the growing expectation that parents spend ever more time and money educating and enriching their children. If you're a parent feeling stressed, our parks are here to help. Studies show that more time spent in parks and green spaces can help individuals fight against mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and stress. Additionally, our parks offer a plethora of free activities for enrichment such as nature exploration areas, recreation facilities for sports and athletics, hiking trails and family friendly events throughout the city.
