LITTLE PUFFER IS BACK!
All Aboard — Little Puffer Is Back and Better Than Ever! 🚂

We’re beyond excited to announce the return of one of SF Zoo’s most beloved attractions — the Little Puffer miniature steam train — and this time, it's rolling out with an exciting new track extension! After a short hiatus, Little Puffer is back on track (literally), with 1,000 feet of additional track that now takes riders on a scenic journey around the eastern side of Bear Country and the upper lake. That’s in addition to favorite sights like the multi-species South American exhibit Puente al Sur, the lush Prehistoric Garden, and more!

Consistently ranked among the Top 10 favorite things to do at the Zoo, the Little Puffer’s return has been highly anticipated — and we can’t wait to welcome guests of all ages back aboard.

This marks the first major renovation to the train since 1998, when the historic ride was lovingly restored thanks to the generosity of the Goldman family after spending 25 years in storage. Originally arriving at the Zoo in 1925, Little Puffer ran for 50 years before it was relocated to make room for growing animal habitats. That restoration included a new steam engine, updated tracks, charming new passenger cars, and a depot that gave it new life.

Now, in addition to the steam-powered Little Puffer, we’re introducing a new diesel-powered train engine! Painted a cheerful green and nicknamed “Cobby” in honor of our late, beloved male chimpanzee, this new engine will occasionally operate in place of Little Puffer to keep the fun rolling rain or shine.

The return of Little Puffer is more than just a ride — it’s a treasured piece of SF Zoo history and a symbol of connection between generations of zoo visitors.
