### Grateful Dead Rose Commemorates Band's 60th Anniversary

As we look back at the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary that was celebrated citywide this past weekend, Rec and Park paid tribute to the band's enduring legacy with a special rose planting in
Golden Gate Park’s Rose Garden. (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c80fyj/wfcl20hc/gjcbsu)

12 newly developed 'Grateful Dead' hybrid tea roses were planted in the front right bed of the garden. Vibrant, fragrant, and deep red in color, the roses were bred by JB Williams and Associates, a renowned third-generation rose breeding family based in Maryland. The variety was specially named to honor the band's cultural impact and connection to San Francisco.

Roses hold special meaning in Grateful Dead lore, often appearing in the band's lyrics, album covers, and iconography.

Rec and Park gardeners planted the roses last Friday morning, ensuring optimal growing conditions in their new home.

The idea for the Grateful Dead rose began when Wendy Weir, sister of Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir, approached JB Williams and Associates with the vision to create a rose in honor of the band.

The Rose Garden, located along the car-free JFK Promenade near 14th Avenue, was established in 1961. It features everything from the simple five-petal wild rose to hybridized blooms in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and fragrances. For more information, click the link below.

# Hiroshima Survivor Trees Inspire Gathering at Japanese Tea Garden

City officials, faith leaders, community members, and peace advocates gathered in Golden Gate Park's
Japanese Tea Garden (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c80fyj/wfcl20hc/k2hbsu)
earlier today to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The gathering was hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council (SFIC) in collaboration with the United Religions Initiative (URI) and the Japanese American Religious Federation (JARF).

Held at the site of two flourishing ginkgo saplings--descendants of trees that survived the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima--the event served as a solemn meditation and a shared affirmation of peace. The saplings were planted in 2019 as a gift from URI's Hiroshima Cooperation Circle, in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco. They stand as living symbols of survival, rebirth, and humanity's resolve to move toward a world free from nuclear weapons.

Attendees reflected on the past, honored the victims of nuclear war, and recommitted to a peaceful future. City officials and interfaith leaders offered words of unity, while participants engaged in prayer and silent contemplation.

As we mark this historic anniversary, these trees--and the global movement they represent--remind us that even in the shadow of destruction, life, hope, and peace can take root and flourish.

### Coyote Pupping Season in our Parks

As we hit the dog days of summer, it means that we're in the midst of coyote pupping season. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, parent coyotes may become territorial if you or your pet stumble upon their den.

To foster a safe coexistence between yourself and our natural neighbors (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c80fyj/wfcl20hc/kawbsu), please take the following precautions:

  * Never feed coyotes or any wildlife
  * Keep dogs on leashes in our parks, unless in a designated off-leash dog play area
  * Only admire coyotes from a distance

If you encounter a coyote, slowly back away carrying any small children or pets. Do not run. You may also scare the coyote away by appearing large and making loud noises.

If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at noopener noreferrer (mailto:acc at sfgov.org).

For more information, visit ACC's coyote page at the link below.
