An Adults-only Valentine's Event
Tickets are still available! Come celebrate Valentine’s Day by getting the inside scoop on the mating and breeding behaviors of animals during “Woo at the Zoo,” an adults-only, fun and eye-opening event. Enjoy a multi-media presentation, champagne and brunch on Saturday, February 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Zoo’s Osher Great Hall.

The program offers a scientific look at some of the more remarkable facts, including animal reproduction, choosing mates and raising families. Topics range from how rhinoceros’ “foreplay” lasts for more than a month while mating occurs only once a year, to the engagement of “necking” during giraffe courtship, to how female opossums can get pregnant while they’re pregnant.

In addition to sharing information about the sex lives of animals, Woo at the Zoo illustrates how species maintain their populations and how SF Zoo assists in the reproductive process through its successful breeding programs.

Woo at the Zoo is limited to guests, 21 years or older. Tickets are $65 for Zoo Members and $75 for non-members and includes parking and Zoo admission. Pre-advance purchases and reservations for Woo at the Zoo are required. For more information visit sfzoo.org (https://www.sfzoo.org/special-programs/) .

Support St. Anthony's by Donating Clothing
We are partnering with St. Anthony’s Foundation now thru March 13 to help collect new and gently-used clothing for their free clothing program. Drop off your donations to our Entry Village, located at the main entrance of the Zoo. This program provides clothing to individuals and families experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Accepted items include casual wear, warm clothes, business attire, children’s clothing and in particular men’s socks, shoes, jackets, pants and shirts. According to St. Anthony’s website (https://www.stanthonysf.org/services/clothing/) , items should be clean and in good condition.

Congratulations to St. Anthony’s Foundation on their 75th anniversary, whose commitment and compassion to our community is incomparable.
NEWS TO KNOW
Superb Owl + Tasty Game Day Specials!

The Big Game is coming up this weekend, and you know what that means! Well, it's not only two teams battling it out on the field for the championship trophy, it's a day to celebrate our "superb owls!" You can find a variety of owl species here, such as "Thatcher," our nearly 12 year-old male Eurasian eagle owl (pictured here), among several species that reside in both our Animal Rescue & Conservation Center and at Puente al Sur.

Superb Owl Sunday helps to raise awareness of the 250 species of owl and their importance to help maintain a healthy ecosystem. As predators, they help to regulate small animal populations, such as rodents. Let's all give a hoot about owls!

Stop by the Leaping Lemur Café this weekend for our mouth-watering Big Game Day Tailgate Specials, offered on Saturday and Sunday, February 8 & 9. As it is "nacho" ordinary day, every bite is a big win!

The special menu was created by Chef Bryant and team. Go Team!

Big Game Day Tailgate Specials:
* Philly Cheesesteak Tater Tots - crispy golden tater tots piled high with tender roast beef and sauteed onions smothered in rich, melty queso.

* KC BBQ Pulled Pork Kettle Chips - kettle chips stacked with smoky pulled pork, drizzled with house-made BBQ sauce, topped with creamy melted queso and tangy pickle chips for the perfect sweet and savory bite.

* The Big Game Pretzel Club - Roasted turkey, spicy pepper jack cheese, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato slices, and pickled red onions, drizzled with BBQ sauce and spicy mustard, all stacked on a soft pretzel bun. Finished with crushed potato chips for extra crunch and served with a side of queso dip.

Spotlight on Critically Endangered Species
Reverse the Red Day
One of our key initiatives this year is to highlight the critically endangered species that reside here, designated as such by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which produces the Red List of Threatened Species, a critical indicator of the health of the world's biodiversity. The Red List is more than a list of animal, plant and fungi species and their status, but serves to inform about populations, habitats and ecology, plus threats and what is needed to make vital conservation decisions.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Red List, and in honor of this important milestone, all year long, our most critically endangered species - from Bornean orangutans to Western lowland gorillas to axolotls and the Panamanian Golden frog - will be a part of a campaign to raise the red flag on the precarious situation these species face. We invite you to be a part of this important time in our history, as we can all be a part of the solution. Keep your eyes out as we turn the spotlight on our critically endangered animals and the vital work of the IUCN.

Reverse the Red Day

On Friday, February 7th, we join zoos, botanical gardens, conservationists and others to observe Reverse the Red Day, aimed at reversing the negative trends of species in decline that are designated on the IUCN Red List. The Red List categorizes species based on their extinction risk. The nine categories are extinct, extinct in the wild critically endangered (the species in immediate danger of extinction), endangered (species with a high risk of extinction), vulnerable, near threatened, species of least concern, data deficient and not evaluated. On Reverse the Red Day, we work to raise awareness of positive conservation efforts, and the collective efforts to reverse the decline of threatened species.
