Email from SF Recreation and Parks Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements India Basin Waterfront Park's RecFest on January 19 Join India Basin Waterfront Park (900 Innes Avenue) and community partners for RecFest on Sunday, January 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be free food, a DJ, prizes, a fitness station, recreational activities and contests, and more. Come out for a day of community during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend! Learn more about India Basin Waterfront Park at the link below. India Basin Waterfront Park India Basin Food Pavilion Schedule for January Join En2action for its Pop-Up Series at the India Basin Waterfront Park Food Pavilion (900 Innes Avenue) to kick off 2025! The series will feature an array of delicious offerings throughout January. On Saturdays, from January 4 to 25, the pavilion will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving fresh sandwiches, small bites, coffee, and tea. Bayview Pasta will be holding it down on Sundays, from January 5 to 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. San Francisco’s own Chef Joshua Felciano brings his passion for hand-milled flour and farm-sourced grains to the table, crafting delectable fresh pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas. Come out and explore the endless pasta-bilities! On Mondays, from January 6 to 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be an assortment of drinks and pastries from Ujamaa Kitchen to start your week right. For more information, click the link below. Food Pavilion Magnolias Beginning to Bloom at the San Francisco Botanical Garden The first couple of magnolia trees at the San Francisco Botanical Garden (1199 9th Avenue) are already starting to show off ahead of their winter bloom season! Experience one of the most significant conservation collections of Magnolias in the United States, which bloom mid-January through March. Admire the sights and scents of the branches of more than 200 elegant trees, as velvety silver buds and saucer-sized pink, white, and magenta flowers make an appearance in this spectacular annual bloom. For more information, click the link below. Magnificent Magnolias Rec & Park Begins 2025 with Fresh Upgrades While many enjoyed the holiday break, our operations team was busy enhancing our parks. We've refinished the floors at Minnie and Lovie Ward, Moscone, and Sunset recreation centers; repaired pathways at the Turquoise Way Trail in Glen Canyon Park and TPC Harding Park; and replaced bleachers at Rossi Playground. This week, we're kicking off resurfacing projects for outdoor sports courts at Eureka Valley Recreation Center, Rochambeau Playground, and Victoria Manalo Draves Park. Come enjoy the fresh new looks of these parks in 2025! GGP Senior Center Survey Open through January 13 Take a survey to help shape the future of the new outdoor recreation area at the Golden Gate Park Senior Center. Review the two concept designs and provide feedback on potential amenities and programming for senior-focused outdoor fitness activities, including exercise equipment, dance, tai chi, yoga, and Zumba, as well as passive activities like crafts and workshops. GGP Senior Center Rec Area Community Meeting to Rename Waller Street Skate Park on January 18 Join community partners for a meeting to consider renaming Waller Skate Plaza in honor of Zion Williams-Gains on Saturday, January 18 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Stanyan Park Hotel Cafe (750 Stanyan Street). Zion was a legendary skateboarder who lost his vision in 2021 to gun violence, but had relearned his daredevil tricks. A fixture at San Francisco skateparks, he was integral as an advocate in pushing for recent improvements to Waller Street Skatepark. Read more about Zion's life from the San Francisco Chronicle at the link below. Remembering Zion Let'sPlaySF! Initiative Survey Open through January 31 The Let’sPlaySF! Initiative, a partnership between Rec and Park and the San Francisco Parks Alliance to transform 13 of San Francisco’s most timeworn playgrounds into dynamic hubs for creativity and family life, is nearing its goal. The initiative, funded by the 2012 Park Bond, San Francisco Parks Alliance, and philanthropic partners, has renovated 11 playgrounds, with two more transformations on the way. The renovated playgrounds have already become cherished community spaces. Please take this survey to let us know how Let’sPlaySF! playgrounds have brought joy to your neighborhood and communities. Initiative Survey Upcoming Events Birding for Families & Children at Heron's Head Park on January 11 San Francisco Nature Education (SFNE) is hosting a bird walk field trip on Saturday, January 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at Heron's Head Park (32 Jennings Street). Birding for Families San Francisco Bay Sox Girls Baseball Clinic on January 11 Join the San Francisco Bay Sox Girls Baseball Program for free clinics to work on your game this offseason! The next will take place on Saturday, January 11 for girls of all skill levels at Margaret Hayward Playground (1016 Laguna Street) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for ages 7 to 10 and noon to 1:30 p.m. for ages 11 to 14. SF Bay Sox SF Rose Society Pruning Workshop in Golden Gate Park on January 11 Join the San Francisco Rose Society for a pruning workshop on Saturday, January 11 starting at 11 a.m. The demonstration, which takes place at the Rose Garden in Golden Gate Park (Funston Avenue and JFK Drive), will help you to keep your roses healthy all year. SF Rose Society Bottle Boat Builders Kickoff at SF Model Yacht Club on January 12 Calling all aspiring bottle boat builders! Come out to the San Francisco Model Yacht Club (1217 John F. Kennedy Drive) on Sunday, January 12 starting at 1 p.m. for the 2025 Bottle Boat Builders Kickoff. Bottle boats are homemade model yachts built from recycled, low cost materials and are a fun and affordable way for novices, especially youth, to experience the joy of model yacht sailing on Spreckels Lake. Bottle Boat Builders Ice Rink Back in Union Square through January 20 The heart of San Francisco has transformed into a winter wonderland with the return of the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Kaiser Permanente. It will be open through Monday, January 20, 2025. Surrounded by festive lights and the vibrant atmosphere of San Francisco's shopping district, the rink offers a unique outdoor skating experience for all — from families and friends to couples and colleagues. Union Square Ice Rink Harvey Milk Photo Center: "Oceano" Exhibit Opening on January 25 Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott Street) for the opening of "Oceano - for Seven Generations" on Saturday, January 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. This exhibit by Lana Z Caplan explores the history of the Oceano Dunes, examining the lives of its successive inhabitants and the evolution of photographic history and convention. Through co-constructed, performative portraits, Caplan contrasts the historical occupants—including the Indigenous yak tityu tityu yak tiłhini (ytt) Northern Chumash Tribe, Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 ancient Egyptian film set, the Modernists, and a colony of Depression-era artist and mystic squatters—with the present-day all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding community, highlighting the ongoing public health crisis affecting neighboring areas. HMCA: Oceano Programming and Regular Series Activity & Class Schedule for Civic Center Plazas Check out all of the amazing drop-in activities and scheduled classes available at the reimagined UN Plaza and surrounding Civic Center area. From the Heart of the City Farmers' Market at Fulton Plaza to free skateboarding lessons at UN Plaza, we have something for everyone to get out and play in San Francisco's core. Civic Center Plazas Chess Club Thursdays in Glen Park Join the San Francisco Public Library and Rec and Park for chess club Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Sessions take place at the Glen Park Branch Library (2835 Diamond Street) on the first, third and fifth Thursdays of the month, while sessions on the second and fourth Thursdays take place at Glen Canyon Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street). These sessions are for players of all skill levels including kids (6 and older), teens and adults. Improve your memory, concentration and logical thinking skills through this time-honored game! Drop-In Wheelchair Basketball at Glen Park Recreation Center Glen Park Recreation Center (70 Elk Street) is hosting a free drop-in wheelchair basketball session every Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. in partnership with BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation. All ages are welcome. You don't have to have a mobility disability to participate, but you must be able to maneuver a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available (will fit people at least 5-feet tall). Sundays at the Beach on the Great Highway: Live Music on January 12 Join the Friends of Ocean Beach Park for its Sundays at the Beach programming.
