We also moved closer to transforming the Great Highway into a permanent park. Programmatically, 320,000 people visited the revitalized UN Plaza, our parks hosted a dizzying number of concerts and performances citywide, we celebrated 100 years of Camp Mather, the San Francisco Bay Sox Girls Baseball Program won another national championship, daily public swimming returned to our pools, 11,720 volunteers supported our parks, and we distributed 4,200 plant starts and 600 cubic yards of compost through Garden Resource Days. Community Report Bay FC Unveils Soccer Mini-Pitch at Crocker Amazon Playground Today, Bay FC, Sixth Street, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, and Rec and Park, along with Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisors Shamann Walton and Chyanne Chen, community members, and youth soccer players, kicked off a new era of soccer at Crocker Amazon Playground with the unveiling the first-ever Bay FC-themed mini-pitch in the Bay Area. The opening of this new park feature was celebrated with a ceremonial first kick, followed by a youth clinic hosted by Bay FC players Tess Boade and Maddie Moreau. The mini-pitch, including both materials and installation, were donated to the City through a partnership between the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Bay FC, and Sixth Street Foundation. The new mini-pitch, measuring 50 feet by 84 feet, is a customized, hard-court surface that transforms an underused area into a safe and accessible soccer space for children and adults to learn and play. It incorporates the Club’s Bay Blue and Fog Gray colorways, prominently featuring the Bay FC logo in the middle of the pitch. It is available for play on a first-come-first-serve basis during regular park hours. Bay Football Club (Bay FC) is the new women's professional soccer franchise representing the Bay Area and the 14th team to join the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).They finished their inaugural season with 11 wins – securing the most regular season victories ever by an expansion team, including record-setting six wins on the road, and clinched a playoff spot, becoming only the second team in NWSL history to qualify. The installation is part of the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Safe Places to Play initiative, which aims to install 1,000 soccer mini-pitches throughout the country by 2026, ensuring that children in underserved communities have access to secure and reliable spaces for soccer. Bay FC Mini-Pitch Rec & Park Recognizes Community & Staff at MLK Luncheon Rec and Park, city officials, and community members celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the values he embodied at our 41st Annual MLK Luncheon earlier today. At the event, Rec and Park gave out the Keeping the Dream Alive Awards to honor those who embody Dr. King's legacy. The community award went to the India Basin Waterfront Park Equitable Development Plan (EDP) Leadership Committee. On October 19, 2024, we celebrated the opening of the first phase of India Basin Waterfront Park, a once-in-a generation environmental justice project that connects Bayview-Hunters Point with a healthy shoreline and provides the community with recreation, workforce development and climate resilience. India Basin Waterfront Park is one of the few parks in the nation to be guided by an Equitable Development Plan —a groundbreaking, community-led process that ensures the park reflects the identity, culture, and needs of the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. The EDP Leadership Committee is a group of passionate and dedicated residents of Bayview-Hunters Point who worked tirelessly to craft a vision for this park that uplifts the community far beyond its boundaries. We are grateful for their work and look forward to their continued guidance. Rec and Park also gives out an internal Keeping the Dream Alive award, and the department's Partnerships Division received this honor. Philanthropy is vital to our department and behind the scenes, this team has secured funding and support for our world class parks, playgrounds and recreation programs. Their efforts have been instrumental in initiatives like LetsPlaySF!, the Golden Gate Tennis Center renovation, India Basin Waterfront Park, and our new Bay FC soccer mini-pitch. We want to express our gratitude to the awardees for their work to lift up all those who have been overlooked and for honoring Dr. King's legacy.
