Animal Mating & More During Valentine’s Woo at the Zoo
Birds do it, bees do it and as guests will learn during the eye-opening presentation, “Woo at the Zoo,” all animals “do it”! For the first time in several years, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens will be bringing back its popular adults-only event to take place on Saturday, February 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Zoo’s Osher Great Hall.
Woo at the Zoo focuses on the mating and breeding behavior of animals during a 90-minute, humorous, multi-media presentation and brunch, that will include some up-close animal encounters. Contrary to common belief, no animals will “mate on cue” but guests will learn much about how a variety of species mate.
The program offers a scientific look at some of the more remarkable facts, including animal reproduction, choosing mates and raising families. Topics range from how rhinoceros’ “foreplay” lasts for more than a month while mating occurs only once a year, to the engagement of “necking” during giraffe courtship, to how female opossums can get pregnant while they’re pregnant.
In addition to sharing information about the sex lives of animals, Woo at the Zoo illustrates how species maintain their populations and how SF Zoo assists in the reproductive process through its successful breeding programs. Woo at the Zoo also features brunch as well as admission to the Zoo afterward, parking is also included.
Woo at the Zoo is limited to guests, 21 years or older. Tickets are $65 for Zoo Members and $75 for non-members and includes parking and Zoo admission. Pre-advance purchases and reservations for Woo at the Zoo are required. For more information visit sfzoo.org.

Meet Our New Bactrian Camel!
Our newest animal resident arrived recently and is already a must-see! Meet our new 8-year-old male Bactrian camel, named “Bactrius Maximus II” by a donor. Bactrius is a domestic Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus), born at the Blank Park Zoo in Iowa. There is a distinction between domestic and wild Bactrian camel species (Camelus ferus). Although they appear similar, they differ in size and shape, especially evident in the shape of the two humps, which are more pyramid-shaped than its domestic counterpart.
Bactrian camels are also known as the Mongolian camel or two-humped camel and wild Bactrian camels are critically endangered in their native Gobi Desert range located in northern China and Mongolia. The fewer than
1,000 individuals remaining live in the Lop Nur Wild Camel National Nature Reserve in China, with smaller populations found in the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area in Mongolia. As such, they are considered the eighth most endangered large mammal in the world. They are threatened by poaching, habitat loss, human interference and hybridization with domestic camels. Domestic Bactrian camels are not a threatened species.
The arrival of our new male is an opportunity for us to tell the story of camels, their long and storied history with mankind and the plight of wild Bactrian camels. You can visit our Bactrius Maximus II in the outdoor habitat located adjacent to the Przewalski’s horses. After a period of acclimation, we hope to introduce the horses and camel together! New Healthy Menu Options!
You spoke and we listened! We know a trip to the Zoo is not complete without a burger or chicken tenders, but now there are menu options for a healthier palate available at the Leaping Lemur Café.
Created by our own Chef Bryant Riley, you’ll enjoy a seasonal twist to the classic Cobb salad with the new Winter Cobb Salad that combines spiced butternut squash, blue cheese crumbles, roasted garbanzo beans, citrus roasted apples, red onions, roasted pepitas over a fresh spring mix and house-made vinaigrette.
And who doesn’t love a delicious veggie sandwich? New to the menu is a multigrain vegetarian sandwich with pesto, spring mix, bell peppers, apples, cucumbers, pepitas and onions. You can pick up both of these healthy options at the Grab-&-Go section of the Lemur Café!
