### Majestic Sea Serpent Surfaces at Golden Gate Park

A larger-than-life sea serpent is making waves at
Golden Gate Park (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/4lmznu)'s
Rainbow Falls (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/kenznu)
with the debut of the
immersive art installation Naga (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/06nznu)
along the car-free
JFK Promenade (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/gzoznu).

Towering 25 feet high and stretching over 100 feet long, Naga is a majestic metal serpent composed of five glowing segments installed at the base of the waterfall. Lit from within and occasionally exhaling gentle bubbles from its nose, Naga comes alive at night when its shimmering scales ripple with pulsing rainbow lights.

Designed by artists Cjay Roughgarden, Stephanie Shipman, and Jacquelyn Scott, this awe-inspiring work of public art invites visitors of all ages into a whimsical world of light, color, and fantasy. The installation was made possible through a partnership between Rec and Park, nonprofit Illuminate, the Sijbrandij Foundation, and art production studio Building 180.

Naga is part of the larger two-part installation Naga and The Captainess. While the full piece featured both the serpent and a sculptural shipwreck, only the sea serpent is currently on view. Lantern-lit seating in the shape of a sunken ship will be added later this year, creating a whimsical gathering space for reflection, connection, and story-sharing. ### Acclaimed Artist Betsabee Romero Unveils JFK Promenade Sculptures

Six temporary large-scale sculptures by world-renowned Mexican artist
Betsabeé Romero (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/ckqznu)
have been installed along the
JFK Promenade (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/scrznu)
in
Golden Gate Park (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/84rznu), reenergizing the permanently car-free space and highlighting sustainability.

The sculptures are crafted from repurposed tires, paint, mirrors, metal, and wooden bases, combining urban materials with artistic vision to reflect themes of movement, transformation, and reclaiming public space.

Romero is a celebrated visual artist known for transforming cars and car parts--especially tires--into large-scale sculptures that blend pre-Columbian motifs with themes of mobility, migration, and cultural resilience.

Betsabee arrived just in time for the debut of her new installation, where she was welcomed with a reception at McLaren Lodge. She also led a fun art-making activity with summer campers from the Joe Lee Rec Center.

The artworks, made possible through a partnership between Rec and Park, nonprofit Illuminate, Building 180[](https://www.facebook.com/building180?__cft__\[0\]=AZUNOHkShNb1no4-3wVD4FgndxC0E-4g6bbJxVfUfv-2bK8g-v5zvG3WepMf5mMLTJqH0cTojZHYC_SoN0C_1c5XfaXl8JItXtI0psotB7YeF_Ikq9FP59FZ8dauw4TtEr6P15k05L0acsfLBtiaMphVbmoBG0wA_F3RMziXIMZsEaDf5-qEGIb3kHknNsrgaFQ&__tn__=-\]K-R), and the Sijbrandij Foundation, are located along the Promenade between Conservatory Drive East and Conservatory Drive West and will be on display through March 2026. # Sunset Boulevard Gets $1.5 Million for Infrastructure & Workforce Development

District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio, Senator Scott Wiener, and Mayor Daniel Lurie's Chief of Climate, Transportation and Mobility Alicia John-Baptiste announced a coordinated city and state investment to revitalize Sunset Boulevard, a major recreation and open space corridor on San Francisco's westside. $1 million will be dedicated to the Sunset Boulevard Recycled Water Project.

The improvements, designed by Public Works, will replace potable water supplied for irrigation with highly treated recycled water that exceeds state standards. Senator Scott Wiener successfully secured this funding in the California state budget this fiscal year.

The remaining $500,000 will launch a new maintenance and workforce training program, a partnership of Rec and Park, Northern California Laborers Training Center, and Public Works. Supervisor Joel Engardio prioritized this request in the city budget, which also secured support from Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Measuring over 2 miles in length, Sunset Boulevard is a 60-acre greenbelt that connects Golden Gate Park and Lake Merced. A biodiversity hotspot, the corridor features 30 rain gardens, native plant habitat, a multipurpose recreational trail, and exercise equipment. In June 2025, Supervisor Engardio successfully nominated Sunset Boulevard as a Priority Conservation Area, a regionally significant designation adopted by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. # India Basin Artist-In-Residence Program to Culminate in an Exhibit & Event

The San Francisco Arts Commission and Rec and Park are thrilled to announce the successful culmination of a yearlong Artist-in-Residence Program at
India Basin Waterfront Park (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/kiuznu).

Local artists Afatasi the Artist and Conni McKenzie spent the past year embedded in the park's transformation, gathering stories, building community, and creating original works that reflect the culture, history, and everyday life of the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Now, their projects--shaped by deep engagement and local voices--will be unveiled for the public.

Conni McKenzie: Roots, Tides, Leaves
Roots, Tides, Leaves, an exhibition of images featuring Black residents of Bayview-Hunters Point in nature--especially at India Basin Waterfront Park--will be on display at the
EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/0avznu)
(32 Jennings Street) from August 9 to 16. In a world that often disconnects Black bodies from nature, McKenzie's work offers reconnection and a sense of home.

Afatasi the Artist: Finders Keepers
On September 6, Afatasi the Artist will present "Finders Keepers," an interactive experience inviting Bayview-Hunters Point residents to rediscover India Basin Waterfront Park (900 Innes Avenue) and the surrounding neighborhood in fresh, meaningful ways.

Afatasi will create small, hand-welded sculptures and hide them throughout the park for community members to discover and take home. As participants search for these one-of-a-kind pieces, they'll enjoy a community celebration with local food, music, and a live welding demo by the artist.

Finders Keepers seeks to reclaim public space for creativity and community and pays tribute to Bayview's legacy of skilled makers and artisans--especially Black women welders who worked in the shipyards during WWII.

### Grateful Dead to Mark 60 Years With Golden Gate Park Shows from August 1-3

San Francisco's iconic Grateful Dead will celebrate their 60th anniversary with three days of concerts in Golden Gate Park this weekend, the same place where their journey began.

Emerging from the city's Haight-Ashbury scene in the mid-1960s, the Dead helped define the sound and spirit of the counterculture movement. Their shows in the park, which include locations such as

This anniversary event is a homecoming for the band and honors its deep roots in the city and the park's storied role as a stage for musical and social revolution.

### Coyote Pupping Season in our Parks

As we hit the dog days of summer, it means that we're in the midst of coyote pupping season. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, parent coyotes may become territorial if you or your pet stumbles upon their den.

To foster a safe coexistence between yourself and our natural neighbors (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gr2sxj/wfcl20hc/w3a0nu), please take the following precautions:

  * Never feed coyotes or any wildlife
  * Keep dogs on leashes in our parks, unless in a designated off-leash dog play area
  * Only admire coyotes from a distance

If you encounter a coyote, slowly back away carrying any small children or pets. Do not run. You may also scare the coyote away by appearing large and making loud noises.

If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at noopener noreferrer (mailto:acc at sfgov.org).

For more information, visit ACC's coyote page at the link below.
