CONSERVATION
Spotlight on Coquerel's Sifaka
https://www.sfzoo.org/coquerels-sifaka/
Our pair of Coquerel's sifaka (https://www.sfzoo.org/coquerels-sifaka/) (Propithecus coquereli) are easily recognizable medium-sized lemurs, with a mostly white head, body and tail and brown patches on the chest, arms and thighs, and on their face, ears and the bottoms of their hands and feet. What makes them truly distinct is the way they move about, their locomotion! Sifaka have a unique posture and hop bi-pedally with arms outstretched when moving on the ground. They are also big leapers, able to propel themselves a distance of 20-30 feet while moving from tree to tree!
The Coquerel's sifaka is listed as critically endangered in the IUCN Red List with a population in their forest habitat of Madagascar in continuing decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation from slash and burn agriculture, deforestation for livestock farming and charcoal production. Local traditions typically prevent the hunting of this species for food, but it is still a prevalent threat, even in protected areas.
SF Zoo participates in the AZA's Prosimian Taxon Advisory Group and the Malagasy Fauna Interest Group. See our Coquerel's sifakas, "Karen" and "Neil" at the sifaka habitat adjacent to the Lipman Family Lemur Forest and Madagascar Center.
World Oceans Day
As one of just a few zoological parks located by an ocean, we are truly a coastal zoo, where the ocean breezes serve as a natural filtering system, resulting in cleaner air. It is one of the many benefits of "living" on the coast, especially when it comes to our educational programs that relate to the ocean, allowing us to "show and tell." On this World Oceans Day, we hope you'll join us as we celebrate the vital role oceans play, and why we must continue to protect our ocean environment and save marine life.
We know that the growing plastic pollution in our oceans is having an increasing negative effect in our marine life, as microplastics are ingested by marine organisms, and in turn, humans ingest certain fish and other marine animals, while microplastic also effects ecosystems. This is why we discourage use of single-use plastics and encourage reusable alternatives. In our Zoo restaurants, we do not offer single-use plastics and instead have for purchase reusable bottles, as well as compostable cups, utensils and plates.
Thank you for making a difference! On Saturday and Sunday, June 7 & 8, visit our pop-up World Oceans Day conservation table from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. by the Lion Fountain and Penguin Island.
