** Finding Sarah’s Family: Confirming Connections Through DNA and Documents
------------------------------------------------------------
https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/finding-sarahs-family-confirming-connections-through-dna-and-documents

Photo: Katy Rowe-Schurwanz presenting live in Salt Lake City

In this live session, Katy (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/speakers/katy-rowe-schurwanz/en) walked attendees through the fascinating story of tracing “Sarah,” a woman from McCracken County, Kentucky, using both DNA and traditional records. She demonstrated how autosomal and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) helped confirm relationships and reveal deeper family origins in Logan County and Northern Ireland. A powerful example of how stories emerge when you combine genetic tools with historical context.

In his engaging webinar, Dave (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/speakers/dave-vance/en) showed how you can bring together autosomal, Y-DNA, and mitochondrial DNA results to build a single, more complete family tree. He broke down the role of each test type, walked through real-world examples, and demonstrated how FamilyTreeDNA tools connect the dots across different lines of your ancestry. Attendees came away with practical tips for maximizing the insights in their results—especially with Group Projects, Family Matching, and the Discover platform.

** Bennett’s Y Chromosomal Time Machine
------------------------------------------------------------

Photo: Bennett Greenspan speaking at RootsTech 2025

In a packed session that felt both personal and historic, Bennett (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/speakers/bennett-greenspan/en) shared how more than 20 years of Y-DNA research has brought his own family history full circle. He walked through his experience using the Big Y Block Tree and Discover Time Tree to place his Y-25 matches—including the closest 100 men of all surnames—on a timeline that traces back to 150 CE. His talk was a testament to how far genetic genealogy has come since he first picked up the phone in 1999 to order a Y-DNA test.

We will record Bennett’s session and will be sharing it soon on social media. Be sure to follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/familytreedna) , Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/familytreedna) , , and Twitter (https://twitter.com/familytreedna) so you don’t miss it!

** Using Genetic Genealogy to Break Down a Brick Wall (3-Part Series)
------------------------------------------------------------

In this on-demand series, Jim Brewster walked viewers through a real-life case study to demonstrate how Y-DNA testing can uncover answers where the paper trail runs cold. Using the story of James McAllister—a Virginia pioneer with limited records—Jim explained how to identify relevant haplogroups, interpret SNPs, and build evidence using the Block Tree and Discover tools.

* In Part 1 (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/using-genetic-genealogy-to-break-down-a-brick-wall-part-1) , he introduced the foundational concepts of Y-DNA, haplogroups, and how mutations reveal ancient ancestry.
* In Part 2 (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/using-genetic-genealogy-to-break-down-a-brick-wall-part-2) , he zoomed in on interpreting the Block Tree and analyzing test results to make genealogical connections.
* In Part 3 (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/using-genetic-genealogy-to-break-down-a-brick-wall-part-3) , he revealed a surprising twist—connecting the McAllister line not to Scotland, but to County Kerry, Ireland, through newly available DNA data.

Whether you’re new to Y-DNA or already deep into your research, this series offered a detailed and practical roadmap for solving paternal-line mysteries.
