### Breast Cancer Survivors Unveil First Permanent Breast Cancer Memorial Garden

Mayor Daniel Lurie was joined last weekend by
Bay Area Young Survivors (https://t.e2ma.net/click/0eu5qj/wfcl20hc/ssrijt)
(BAYS) and Rec and Park to unveil the BAYS Breast Cancer Memorial Garden in Golden Gate Park, the first permanent memorial of its kind in the United States dedicated to lives lost to breast cancer. The memorial honors the strength and spirit of those who died and the community of survivors who carry their legacy forward.
Watch the video highlight of the event at this link (https://t.e2ma.net/click/0eu5qj/wfcl20hc/8ksijt)
from Martin Multimedia
% link:https://www.instagram.com/p/DJSAfATyGuS/ name="https://www.instagram.com/p/DJSAfATyGuS/" content="" %].

Located at the junction of Arguello Boulevard and Conservatory Drive, this meaningful new space is the result of an 11-year collaboration between Rec and Park and BAYS, a volunteer-led nonprofit that supports individuals diagnosed with breast cancer aged 45 and under.

The memorial serves as a permanent public site where visitors can remember loved ones lost to breast cancer, draw strength, and reflect. Designed as a sanctuary of remembrance, reflection, and resilience, the garden features a serene seating area surrounded by native plants and oak woodlands, offering views of Conservatory Valley and Sutro Tower. Stone walkways engraved with words from BAYS members living with breast cancer wind through the site, and a metal frame encircles the garden, bearing the names of more than 100 BAYS members who died of metastatic breast cancer. Following the success of last year's events, the 2025 series will once again feature renowned labels, and bring world-class headliners and vibrant local energy to the city's most iconic public spaces: Embarcadero Plaza, Union Square, and Civic Center Plaza. ### San Francisco's U.N. Plaza Wins Statewide Award for Excellence in Design

San Francisco's renovated United Nations Plaza has received a 2024 Award of Excellence from the California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) in the category of Excellence in Design - Facility Design.

Reopened in November 2023 (https://t.e2ma.net/click/0eu5qj/wfcl20hc/0qvijt), U.N. Plaza has become a vibrant community gathering space, offering a variety of new amenities including skate elements, outdoor workout equipment, free fitness classes, chess and ping pong tables and more. Designed to foster activity, inclusion, and connection, the reimagined plaza has played a key role in revitalizing the Civic Center area. In the first year since its reopening on Nov. 8, 2023, the welcoming and dynamic public space attracted more than 340,000 visitors. Reports for daytime drug-related incidents are down 78%.

The $2 million transformation of U.N. Plaza was made possible through a partnership between Rec and Park, San Francisco Public Works, and the Civic Center Community Benefit District, among other partners. The redesign was led by Verde Design, which submitted the project for CPRS award consideration. For more information, click the link below.

### Arts Commission Announces Relocation of "Invocation" to Palega Rec Center

The San Francisco Arts Commission last week successfully restored and relocated "Invocation," a dynamic steel sculpture by the late San Francisco artist Pepe Ozan, to its new permanent home at Palega Recreation Center (500 Felton Street) in the city's Portola neighborhood.

Originally commissioned in 2001 and installed in 2004 at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Vermont Streets as part of the Cesar Chavez Boulevard bicycle infrastructure project, "Invocation" is a striking representation of a Mesoamerican Eagle Warrior, celebrating indigenous heritage and cultural resilience. Crafted from painted steel rod and perforated galvanized metal, the sculpture stands 8.5 feet tall with an 8-foot wingspan, and weighs 245 lbs.

Pepe Ozan, a prominent Mission District artist and filmmaker, was widely known for his monumental sculptures and immersive performances at Burning Man. His contributions to public art in San Francisco include works previously exhibited in Golden Gate Park and along the Blue Greenway Trail. For more information, click the link below.

### New Exhibit Honors Asian American Basketball Culture

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI), our
Video of the Week (https://t.e2ma.net/click/0eu5qj/wfcl20hc/sk5jjt)
highlights the history of the San Francisco Saints Chinese Basketball Team (SFSCBT). As part of this year's Chinese New Year celebration, we unveiled the SFSCBT Legacy Project exhibit at the Betty Ann Ong Recreation Center. The display features photographs, uniforms, and media that celebrate the team's rich and storied history.

This initiative honors the Saints' lasting legacy and their profound impact on San Francisco's Chinatown and Asian American basketball culture. The exhibit is located in the foyer outside the Percy Chu Gymnasium, paying tribute to generations of players who shaped the sport both locally and beyond.

A special thanks to SFSCBT for the generous in-kind donation of memorabilia. Grab your kicks, get some shots up, and discover this local chapter of basketball history at the center.
