Your weekly scoop on San Francisco parks
### Highlights, News & Announcements
### Mayor Lurie Planning to Bring Dead & Company to Golden Gate Park
Mayor Daniel Lurie and Rec and Park announced earlier this week a plan for San Francisco to host a once-in-a-generation musical celebration. If approved, Dead & Company will perform three historic, ticketed concerts at Golden Gate Park's Polo Fields on August 1, 2, and 3, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead.
Rooted in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, the Grateful Dead fostered a sound and spirit that helped define a cultural movement. Now, six decades later, the city is planning to honor that legacy by welcoming fans from around the world to the park that helped launch it. The proposed weekend of music would be a singular celebration--not part of any recurring festival--bringing Dead & Company back to the city where it all began.
The proposal will go before the Recreation and Park Commission on May 15. The concerts would be presented by Another Planet Entertainment and co-produced with Live Nation, in partnership with Rec and Park.
If approved, the concerts are expected to draw up to 60,000 attendees per day, delivering significant benefits to the city's hotels, restaurants, and small businesses. Preliminary projections indicate that the weekend could generate tens of millions of dollars in economic activity and support hundreds of local jobs. Dead & Company's three-day show in 2023 at Oracle Park generated
$31 million (https://t.e2ma.net/click/o9xnrj/wfcl20hc/w3uzkt)
in local economic activity.
The proposed concerts would offer food and beverage options and a comprehensive transportation plan to ensure safe and sustainable access to the shows. The event would also include enhanced security, extensive cleanup efforts, and strong community engagement to minimize neighborhood impacts.
More details from Dead & Company--including a first look at what the historic weekend could bring--are coming soon. For more information, click the link below.

### Mayor Lurie Announces Plan for Professional Soccer Team at Kezar Stadium
Mayor Daniel Lurie last week announced a plan in partnership with Golden City Football Club and Rec and Park to launch a new professional soccer team in San Francisco.
Golden City Football Club (GCFC) plans to join MLS NEXT Pro, the professional league designed by Major League Soccer (MLS) to foster elite player development and expand the reach of the sport. The club will call Kezar Stadium its home, with the inaugural season set to kick off in 2026 or 2027.
The announcement represents a landmark public-private partnership between the new club and the city. As part of this partnership, GCFC will invest a minimum of $10 million in capital improvements at Kezar Stadium, with further investments planned. The upgrades represent the most significant enhancements to Kezar in decades and are designed to benefit all users, not just the team. For more information, click the link below.

### Reception Held for Nominators of Sunset Dunes Name
Last week, we hosted a reception to thank everyone who nominated Sunset Dunes--the winning name for the new park on the former Great Highway. Nearly half of all respondents, or 1,900 people, ranked it in their top 3 out of 15 finalists.
We celebrated with custom cookies, swag, and a new mocktail: the Sunset Dune! Thank you to everyone who shared their creativity to help name a park that will inspire generations of San Franciscans to gather, connect, and play. With a sunny forecast, be sure to get out and play there this week!

### Giants Softball Academy Standout Selected for Elite Development Invitational
Since it was established in 2022, the
San Francisco Giants Community Fund (https://t.e2ma.net/click/o9xnrj/wfcl20hc/o9xzkt), in partnership with Rec and Park, has worked towards growing baseball and softball in San Francisco's underserved communities through its
free academy programming (https://t.e2ma.net/click/o9xnrj/wfcl20hc/41yzkt)
for middle and high school athletes.
One standout emerging from the Softball Academy is Nina Pototo, a sophomore at Lowell High School. A dedicated participant for the past three years, Nina has played in both the spring league and the academy's year-round programming. Her hard work paid off when she made Lowell's varsity softball team as a freshman--and led the team with a .432 batting average.
Off the field, Nina serves as the Vice President of Lowell's Unity Sports Community Club, where she champions equity and inclusion in athletics by mentoring fellow athletes, volunteering with community youth teams, and fundraising for sports programs.
In recognition of her impact on and off the diamond, she has been selected by
USA Softball (https://t.e2ma.net/click/o9xnrj/wfcl20hc/kuzzkt)
and
MLB (https://t.e2ma.net/click/o9xnrj/wfcl20hc/0m0zkt)
to participate in the
Elite Development Invitational (https://t.e2ma.net/click/o9xnrj/wfcl20hc/gf1zkt)
at the Kansas City Royals' Urban Youth Academy this summer. She'll train with the top softball coaches in the country, including current and former USA Women's National Softball Team players, while also playing with some of the top softball players in the country. Congratulations, Nina and good luck in Kansas City!
