MAY/JUNE 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear SFUSD Families:

We are nearly at the end of the school year, and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our students, especially the Class of 2025! Graduation is an important milestone and I am so proud of all of our students for accomplishing so much during their time at school. I can’t wait to hear about where their journey takes them next.

May is a special month for celebration and reflection. We proudly celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich histories and contributions of our AAPI communities. As someone of Vietnamese and Chinese descent, this month is especially meaningful to me. I take pride in my heritage, my family’s traditions and in uplifting the voices and stories of our AAPI students, staff, and families across our district.

We also join communities across the country in celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month, an opportunity to honor the vibrant cultures, traditions, and contributions of Jewish Americans. Jewish heritage reflects a deeply rooted and resilient culture that spans thousands of years. According to the [17] American Jewish Population Project, an estimated 7.6 million people in the United States are Jewish. At SFUSD, we honor our Jewish students, families, and staff.

I want to thank you for your continued support, partnership, and patience as we navigate both our challenges and opportunities, including the important work to stabilize our district.

Wishing you and your family a safe, relaxing, and joyful summer. Thank you for all you do to support our students and our schools.
In community,

Dr. Maria Su

SFUSD Superintendent

BUDGET UPDATES
Update about SFUSD's Efforts to Stabilize Operations and Balance the Budget
SFUSD will need to make almost $114 million in reductions for the next school year. In June, Dr. Su will submit a budget to the Board of Education that reflects our spending plans for the 2025-26 school year.

With every decision, SFUSD is prioritizing teaching and learning in our classrooms, and directing resources where we can to support students. Keeping the quality education of our students front and center means that we must ensure that every student has a qualified teacher in their classroom and access to the care and support they need every single day.

To that end, we achieved a milestone this month when the state agreed to lift the hiring freeze that was in place for over 160 of our teachers. This was the direct result of the hard work of many, including Board of Education members, families and staff. [18] Learn more.

Bond Updates

Thanks to the ongoing support of San Francisco voters, SFUSD runs a strong [24] Bond Programthat invests in capital improvements at schools throughout the district. Summer is our peak construction season and keeps us very busy! From rooftops to school yards, we have more than 42 projects happening over the summer. Some highlights of these investments include:
Schoolyard Outdoor Learning:

Reimagining and renovating schoolyards at Visitacion Valley Middle School, Thurgood Marshall High School, and Jefferson Elementary School — in partnership with SFPUC and CalFire. There will be more shade, more stormwater management, and more fun play and activity areas! These renovations dramatically improve schools’ climate resiliency and create beautiful spaces for outdoor learning.
Security:

Completing PA system upgrades at all schools that still need them.
Modernizations & Core Functionality:

Starting construction at Denman Middle School and Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 School

Making significant progress at Mission Bay School and West Portal Elementary School

Re-roofing Lincoln High School

SUN Bucks Summer 2025

Now is a good time to make sure eligible families can receive a $120 SUN Bucks card per child in the summer of 2025!It is never too late to submit the 2024-2025 SFUSD [33] Multipurpose Family Income Form (MFIF)online at [34] SchoolCafe.com. Submitting the MFIF will help families ensure their eligibility is documented so they can receive SUN Bucks. Eligible families must also ensure that their mailing address in Synergy is up to date so their card gets to them.

Eligibility for SUN Bucks 2025 began on July 1, 2024, and goes through Aug. 31, 2025.

An eligible family that submits their MFIF between now and Aug. 31 will still receive SUN Bucks. The later the submission, the later they will receive their funding.
Any submission received now and deemed eligible will receive their funding in July 2025 at the earliest.
This information can be found on the [35] California Department of Education website, in the “Application” tab.

Other ways to be eligible:

Families can be eligible through direct certification when they are enrolled in other financial assistance. If this is the case, MFIFsubmission is not necessary.

BRIGHT SPOTS
Kattenstoet Week at James Lick Middle School

The Cats Appreciated Tremendously Society (CATS) at James Lick Middle Schoolhosted a fun-filled cat-themed week in April. Librarian Elise Dicharry said, "We played cat-themed music during the passing periods, played cat-themed games, and tossed more than 30 tiny stuffed cats into our lower yard to eager children. We hosted an all-day Yarn Fest in the library where we made cat-themed projects. Our bake sale to support the SPCA raised almost $400. At the end of the week, 18 kids came with me to the KitTea Cat Café to commune with some non-stuffed cats."
AccessSFUSD The Arc's Art Show

On April 24, AccessSFUSD: The Arc wowed audiences with their live performances and art show. Held at the American Conservatory Theater, the event featured original songs, dance routines and wearable/decorative art for sale. Dr. Su poses with her new laser cut earrings and an "Our Beautiful Lives" painting.

"Attending Mission High School opened up opportunities for me to step out of my comfort zone. While in my sophomore year, I was nominated for a program called Summer Search. Being part of that program allowed me to travel to another country by myself for the first time and give back to the community. While it was nerve-wracking, I learned a lot about myself."

"I can’t believe this is my 22nd year working in SFUSD! I’ve been teaching at Lincoln High in their Digital Media Design (DMD) Academy Program, which is a District Career Technical Education (CTE) Program. I’ve had the privilege of working with many DMD cohorts of students, teaching them from 10th through 12th grade as they gain more advanced skills and practice in: ideation, media project planning, industry standard equipment use, and editing skills using professional Adobe software. It’s such a joy to see teenagers eagerly engaged in the creative process from start to finish and to witness them mature into young adults who are responsible and independent creative thinkers!"

"I have been at Bret Harte as a fifth grade teacher, instructional reform facilitator (IRF), and now Assistant Principal and I absolutely love the community here! It feels like home every time I walk into the building. Each year, we face different challenges, but the community comes together to work towards our vision and goals despite the bumps in the road. The Beacon staff, classroom teachers, support staff, and families value collaboration as we support the learning of all of our students. Go Bret Harte Bears!"
