Yoga in the African Savanna Donga
https://www.sfzoo.org/zen-at-the-zoo/
Where else can you practice outdoor yoga surrounded by African animals? Our African Savanna's donga of course! The donga in this case is the area that is located right in the middle of our three-acre Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna, where you can view animals, such as giraffes, zebras and ostriches, from different vantage points as they move about freely within their habitat. The donga is where you will set up your yoga mat for an hour of Vinyasa Flow, truly a time to relax and get into the moment.
As the most unique yoga experience around, you'll practice a variety of poses, uniting breath to movement. Zen at the Zoo is suitable for all skill levels. The next one-hour, once-a-month session will take place on Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. before the Zoo opens to the public. Expect a well-rounded practice invoving sun salutations, standing and seated postures and a strong focus on the power of breath.
Sessions are $25 for Members and $50 for non-members/general public and includes Zoo admission for the full day. Learn more (https://www.sfzoo.org/zen-at-the-zoo/) .

CONSERVATION
Spotlight on Blue-Throated Macaw
https://www.sfzoo.org/blue-throated-macaw/
You can find our pair of colorful, critically endangered blue-throated macaws (https://www.sfzoo.org/blue-throated-macaw/) (Ara glaucogularis) inside the Lion House. Blue-throated macaws are one of the most endangered macaw species in the wild and listed as critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. As of 2021, the number of mature individuals is between just 208-303 where they are found in a small area of north central Bolivia.
At approximately 33 inches long, they have a wingspan of three feet and weigh around 1.5 lbs. They have bright blue feathers on their head and wings, bright yellow feathers on their chest and tail, and a distinctive blue patch on the throat, which gives the species its name and differentiates it from the similar looking blue and yellow macaw. They also have 5-6 stripes on their face, below the eye, with a pattern that is unique to each macaw.
Blue-throated macaws are threatened by habitat loss, specifically logging and burning of habitat, where they are found in forests and savannas. They are also threatened by the pet trade and predators, such as raptors, coatis and brown capuchin monkeys.
We celebrate World Parrot Day on May 31st! Come visit our wide array of parrot species, including those found in our Exploration Zone - the Hyacinth macaws, Salvin's Amazon and yellow-naped Amazon, and at the bird aviary located across from Koala Crossing!
NEWS TO KNOW
Zoo & Aquarium Month
June is just around the corner and the entire month is celebrated as National Zoo and Aquarium Month! For zoo fans, it's a great time to get to know the important roles that zoos and aquariums play when it comes to education, conservation and research, and also as a place to see a variety of animal species, many endangered in the wild.
As part of this special month, we also recognize the dedicated work of our staff and volunteers, who not only work to care for our animal residents, from all our animal caretakers, veterinary team, nutrition, wellness and animal behavior staff, our conservation and research teams, and those who manage the other vital Zoo departments, such as guest service representatives, education and interpretive ambassador staff, environmental services and maintenance crews, horticulture, gift shop and restaurant employees, security personnel, and our administrative team that includes marketing, events, fundraising, membership, finance, IT and human resources. And of course, thanks to our volunteers, from our amazing docents to our youth and adult volunteers! It takes teamwork and a shared passion to support our mission every day.
You can observe National Zoo and Aquarium Month by visiting your local zoo or aquarium, attending events and participating in programs. We encourage you to learn why conservation is so important in protecting species and preserving biodiversity. Donations (https://www.sfzoo.org/donate-today/) also go a long way in helping us continue our work.
