CONSERVATION
Over 2,300 Endangered Frogs Reared and Released This Summer
https://solanolandtrust.org/events-news/stories.html/article/2025/10/28/red-legged-frog-release-a-success
Our Field Conservation Team wrapped up summer releases with one final push!
Our amphibian experts, WRA, and Solano Land Trust released 551 California Red-legged frogs to three ponds near Vallejo this past month. This is the second year of a local conservation program to restore this threatened frog to a conservation bank and thereby create a regional stronghold.
Our other summer successes included: releasing 561 Red-legged Frogs and 70 Yosemite Toads in Yosemite National Park; releasing 913 Sierra Nevada Yellow-legged frogs across the Sierra Nevada from Tahoe National Forest to Yosemite to Sequoia–Kings Canyon National Parks; and releasing 219 adult Mountain Yellow-legged frogs that survived a chytrid outbreak in Kings Canyon.
Our team has released 9,900 endangered frogs and toads since 2014 in partnership with National Park Service, National Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Yosemite and SEKI Helitacks, the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab (UC Santa Barbara), WRA, and Oakland Zoo.
You can read about the most recent release in this article (https://solanolandtrust.org/events-news/stories.html/article/2025/10/28/red-legged-frog-release-a-success) by Solano Land Trust.
Orangutan Caring Week
Orangutan Caring Week starts on Sunday, November 9, with the global theme, "Focusing on Hope and Positive Action." Be sure to stop by our pop-up conservation table located at the Great Ape Passage from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to learn about these critically endangered great apes, and about the efforts being done to protect and save them in the wild.
We also encourage you to visit the Orangutan Caring website (https://orangutancaring.org/) , to learn about the importance of protecting the orangutans' rainforest homes. Orangutans face multiple threats, from the huge demand for palm oil, as their forest homes are converted to palm oil plantations, logging and development, conflict with humans, the illegal pet trade, hunting, agriculture, climate change and more.
On Wednesday, November 12, we also recognize Orange is for Orangutans Day, an awareness campaign where you can participate by wearing the color orange. The day is highlighted by how you can help orangutans by choosing sustainable products and avoid certain palm oil products that are not sustainable and that contribute to deforestation.
Populations for Bornean orangutans, Sumatran orangutans and Tapanuli orangutans continue to decrease at a fervent pace, with all three species listed as critically endangered. Concerted conservation efforts, from habitat protection and restoration to combating the illegal pet trade, are in place, but their survival remains precarious.
