This holiday season, Marin Theatre is thrilled to announce something new — our first-ever family holiday musical.
>From December 13–23, don’t miss the West Coast Premiere of THE GIFT OF NOTHING, adapted for the stage by Patrick McDonnell, Aaron Posner, and Erin Weaver, with music and lyrics by Andy Mitton, and directed and choreographed by Erika Chong Shuch.
Based on McDonnell’s beloved MUTTS characters, Mooch the cat and Earl the dog, this tender and funny musical follows Mooch as he searches for the perfect gift for his best friend. Along the way, he discovers that the true spirit of the season is all about “presence over presents.”
This hour-long show is for animal lovers, families, and friends of all ages. With playful songs, gentle humor, and a heartfelt message, THE GIFT OF NOTHING is a chance to slow down during the busy holiday season and celebrate what matters most: friendship, togetherness, and community. And no matter what you celebrate — Kwanzaa, the Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas or simply gathering with loved ones — you are warmly welcome here.
Your family outing will include:
A festive atmosphere with lobby activities and kid-friendly treats


A relaxed performance on Saturday, Dec 20 at 11am, offering a welcoming environment for those who may benefit from a modified setting


A dog adoption event with Muttville Senior Dog Rescue on Sunday, Dec 21 — meet adoptable senior pups and maybe even bring home a new friend
