Did you ever read that study (linked at the bottom of the newsletter) about how we perceive the steepness of a hill depending on whether we're alone or with a friend? I'll tell you the key takeaway: the hill appears less steep with a buddy by our side. 👯 I thought of the study while reading a reflection letter from River, one of our 2025 Pinnacle Scholars.**
"I just want to say how phenomenal my experience at Outward Bound California was. An unforgettable memory that I have is laughing and having fun during the long hikes, which made the hikes feel like nothing."
Yes, River! May all of our own steep hikes seem like nothing and be filled with laughter!
** Pinnacle Scholars are students who receive full scholarships to join Outward Bound California courses. They have the option to write a reflection letter about their experiences afterward.

Steep? Maybe - depends on the eye (or friend) of the beholder
A study by Schnall, Harber, Stefanucci, and Proffitt (2008) found that participants wearing heavy backpacks perceived a hill as less steep when they stood beside a friend compared to when they stood alone. The takeaway? Social support doesn’t just lighten the load—it can actually change how we perceive challenges.
