CONSERVATION
International Red Panda Day on September 20th
In honor of International Red Panda Day, on Saturday, September 20, visit the Red Panda Treehouse to learn all about red pandas, from their anatomy and habitats, to why they are endangered in the wild.

We will have special keeper talks, a pop-up conservation table, activities and more from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can also see our female red panda, Little Mebo, who is quite food motivated, active and playful.

SF Zoo supports the Red Panda Network (https://redpandanetwork.org/) , the world leader in efforts to save red pandas and their habitats, in the bamboo forests of the Eastern Himalayas and southwestern China, that includes Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China, where they prefer high-altitude environments. Learn (https://redpandanetwork.org/) how you can help save red pandas.

Threats to red pandas include habitat loss and severe fragmentation from deforestation and human development, the illegal wildlife trade and poaching for their fur and the pet trade, and diseases like canine distemper spread by both feral and domestic dogs.

World Rhino Day is September 22nd
We continue to raise awareness as much as possible about the plight of the five species of rhinoceros, three of which - including the Eastern black rhino - are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

World Rhino Day takes place on Monday, September 22 around the globe, and is a day that is dedicated to keeping rhinoceroses top of mind and a reminder of the constant threats that plague these endangered species. It is also a celebration of the conservation efforts to protect and save them.

To honor our rhinos, Greater one-horned rhino, Gauhati and Eastern black rhino, Boone, we are celebrating World Rhino Day on Monday with a special pop-up conservation table that will be located in front of the black rhino habitat from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Our conservation team will be on hand to share what is being done to save rhinos in the wild, and the threats to their survival.
Celebrate World Gorilla Day on September 24th

September 24th marks the date in 1967 when renowned primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey founded her Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, where her groundbreaking research studying mountain gorillas began, and her book, Gorillas in the Mist, brought the plight of mountain gorillas to the forefront.

World Gorilla Day was established in 2017 by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to highlight the threats that all gorilla species face, and a celebration of the recovery of mountain gorillas through dedicated conservation efforts.

Of the four subspecies of gorillas, three are listed as critically endangered due to poaching for bushmeat and the illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss, fragmentation and disease.

Come to the Zoo on Wednesday, September 24th to visit our pop-up conservation table from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve to learn how you can help save gorillas through Gorillas on the Line (GotL), and support of conservation programs.
NEWS TO KNOW
Help us Renew the Zoo this Saturday!
https://www.sfzoo.org/renew-the-zoo/
SF Zoo’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes this 100-acre destination one of the few coastal zoos in the country. The location also means wear and tear from the saltwater and sea air, and a need to clear debris and weed overgrowth that requires constant attention.

We are seeking volunteers from the neighborhood and community to help us “renew the Zoo” as part of an overall beautification project. By picking weeds and clearing debris along our fence line on Sloat Boulevard, you will contribute greatly to making your Zoo presentable to guests who visit from near and far!

The Renew the Zoo/Sloat Boulevard clean-up project will take place this Saturday, September 13 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. If you are interested in volunteering, please email RenewtheZoo at sfzoo.org (mailto:RenewtheZoo at sfzoo.org) to register. We will provide gloves, debris cans, and bottled water. You will also receive a complimentary ticket to visit us that day, or another of your choosing.

Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month!

We are recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month from Monday, September 15 through Wednesday, October 15! This annual celebration honors the culture, history and contributions of people with roots in Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

In celebration of the animals from these regions, visit our South American exhibit areas and species, that include the South American Tropical Rainforest & Aviary to see a variety of amphibians, reptiles and bird species, plus two-toed sloths. At Puente al Sur (Bridge to the South), you'll find an Andean condor, giant anteater and Baird's tapir, and at our Conservation Corridor, find critically endangered axolotls.

Also, be sure to experience our newest art installation, Under the Canopy, created by San Francisco artist, Henry Jackson. This immersive, multi-sensory, walk-through experience highlights the impact and urgency of climate change. The exhibit invites guests to explore the four working tiers of a tropical rainforest and learn how human actions and climate change have ravaged once-pristine environments like the Amazon rainforest.
