Get Ready for BioBlitz 2026!

Aside from our Zoo animals, SF Zoo is also a home, a stomping ground, or stopover for many wild animals. In fact, since last fall, we have tracked 471 distinct species of insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals, plus fungi, based on over 2,000 submissions, thanks to intrepid naturalists and keen observers using the addictive app, iNaturalist.

These "citizen scientists" use iNaturalist to identify species for submission, and a simple walk around the Zoo you'll no doubt spot a flock of Western gulls, a murder of crows, or ducks and egrets hanging out around our lakes. But take a closer look, and you may spot a black-crowned night heron, red-shouldered hawk, white-crowned sparrow, black phoebe, Anna's hummingbird, Eastern gray squirrel and more, at our gardens and habitats.

On Sunday, May 10, we invite you to participate in our first-ever BioBlitz event. A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible within a designated area over a limited period of time. At 10 a.m., come to the Great Hall for a pre-BioBlitz orientation.

And it's easy! Just download the iNaturalist app from the Apple Store or Google Play, and get started! This is an opportunity to contribute your findings to an overall database that will help us better understand our wild neighbors, migratory bird and butterfly patterns, and appreciate all living things.
ANIMAL NEWS
Lobo Week
One of our favorite animal weeks is upon us as we celebrate Lobo Week, which recognizes the recovery of the Mexican gray wolf. As the most endangered gray wolf subspecies in North America, we have participated in the Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program, a cooperative effort in partnership with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums' Mexican Gray Wolf Species Survival Plan and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, since 2016.

Nearly 50 years ago, the once-numerous Mexican gray wolf was on the brink of extinction after being nearly extirpated by livestock ranchers, hunting, trapping, and poisoning. When the population went down to only seven individual wolves, zoos were able to offer a hand to help save the species. From the seven rescued wolves in captivity, 11 wolves were subsequently released into a small, protected pocket of Arizona and New Mexico. These 11 wolves are responsible for repopulating the approximate 286 individuals that now live in the wild, and about another 380 wolves in managed care, like the ones at SF Zoo.

We will be sharing some exciting news about the program shortly. Until then, Happy Lobo Week!
